COYLE: "I Turned down 17 MILLION for CAHILL

Please tell me where Owen Coyle says he turned down 17 million for Cahill? Why have you said that in your articles title when he does not at any point say he declined this offer. Hipster you are usually the first to jump on people for distorting facts and to be honest this is somewhat disappointing from you. 


For those who came here as I did thinking I might learn something here is the FULL text which Hipster clearly couldn't be bothered to copy and paste, possibly because it would prove his article title is nonsense.

THE last sighting of England at Wembley featured Per Mertesacker climbing above a static defence in white to score the goal which inflicted the nation’s first back-to-back home defeats in 36 years last November.
Four months on from the 1-0 setback against Germany, Roy Hodgson put a firm block a few weeks back on the idea that John Terry might be recalled from international retirement to steady the gathering worries at the back.

So now the stage is clear of clutter in the public mind for the coming World Cup.

Now, the player who gets the benefit of playing alongside Terry most weeks for Chelsea can assume the mantle worn so uncompromisingly by his club skipper whenever he represented his country. Gary Cahill has been backed to become a similarly dependable and imposing defensive figure for both his club and his national side.

“Gary has fully established himself in the England team now and there was never any doubt that was going to happen – no matter who was in competition for places,” said Owen Coyle, the mentor who managed Cahill at Bolton Wanderers between 2010 and 2012.

“From day one when I walked into Bolton, he just oozed class.

“He is so talented and yet still relatively young at 28. Chelsea was always the right move for him because I knew he would learn and improve so much playing alongside John Terry. 

“There is no doubt that playing alongside John will help his development.

“He will only get better and better and he could carry on doing what he’s doing for Chelsea and England for at least another seven or eight years yet.”

The centre-back pairing had presented Hodgson with his most complex problem after he first took on the job – with the fall-out from Terry’s involvelment in a racial confrontation with Anton Ferdinand eventually signalling the end of the of the Chelsea captain’s international career and that of Rio Ferdinand.


Hodgson was always determined to stick with the players who qualified for Brazil, with Cahill and Everton’s Phil Jagielka the preferred partnership.

Jagielka is absent from this squad but the two were teamed up in both the ties which clinched qualification against Montenegro and Poland last October. 

They had also been instrumental together in the critical goalless draw in Ukraine.

This pointed the way forward.

But concerns were raised when Cahill’s mistake allowed Alexis Sanchez to score the second of his two brilliant goals in Chile’s 2-0 win at Wembley, which preceded the defeat by the Germans.

Cahill started against Chile with Jagielka on the bench. It was vice versa against Germany.

Coyle, who most recently managed Wigan, added: “I always thought Gary would play regularly for England.

“When you have a player of that quality, you are always aware that the big clubs are going to come calling.

“Gary had had to cope mentally with a lot around that time. There was speculation about him in every transfer window.

“I said to him ‘When the right thing comes along, I will make sure we do right by you. I’ll make sure that it’s a club that suits everything that you have to offer’.

“The summer before he moved to Chelsea, Manchester City came in and offered £17 million and a player.

“That was going to be a huge deal. Obviously, something happened, so he stayed on at Bolton and it never materialised

“Come the following January in 2012, when it was Chelsea who came in, it was the right thing for him, no doubt. They got absolutely got a bargain at £7million. We were at the wrong end of the table and caught up in a battle but I’d always said we would do right by him and give him his chance.”



At Chelsea, the medals have arrived thick and fast for Cahill. He has won the Champions League, the Europa League and the FA Cup already.

Coyle said: “When you are a player, you think this one or that one is a good opponent. But it’s when you get to work with them on a daily basis, that you see their real attributes.

“Gary has the quick feet of a centre forward, he’s fast and has great timing in the air. And his character? He just wanted to be the best he could be.

“He’s a real goal threat, too. He gets on the end of corners and I’ve seen him put them in from 25 yards or volley them in from the box.

“He still keeps in touch. That shows you the measure of the man. He is such a fantastic young man.

“It was always a huge thing for him, wanting to represent his country.

“He’ll go from strength to strength now. He’ll thrive in the World Cup atmosphere.

“I always felt that Chelsea was the right fit for him. John Terry was there, a great player and a leader and there were things that he had that Gary could learn from to get better.”

As you can clearly see Owen does NOT say he turned it down. Hipster has used an unnecessarily misleading title, perhaps because he still feels Owen Coyle is responsible for everything from the asteroid impact that wiped out the dinosaurs to today's global warming?

At the time I like many fellow trotters were delighted that Cahill WASN'T sold that summer, it showed what we thought was the right sort of determination to keep our best players and move the club forward and I like many others applauded Owen for refusing Arsenal when they tried to make a last minute bid as did Harry Redknapp at Spurs. I think Owen Coyle did well to keep Gary for another few months and his last act in our shirt was to score.

good lord, sorry to inconvenience you with the single click you'd have to make to read it. 

crikey charley I didn't expect to get torn to shreds over a bloody thread title. 

I always ham it up a bit in the titles (as I assumed people would know by now) to get people to click them but his explanation is fairly ambiguous so the deal being knocked back is as likely as any other speculative explanation.
