Chris Eagles could be allowed to leave Wanderers on loan today if an interested party steps forward and makes a suitable offer.
Charlton Athletic were the latest club to be linked with the 28-year-old playmaker yesterday, with reports in South London claiming the two clubs had reached an agreement to send him to the Valley for the rest of the season.
Sources at Wanderers were denying any talks had taken place – although The Bolton News understand the interest from Charlton is real and could gather pace before today’s 5pm deadline if they are given encouragement Eagles would be willing to move back to the capital.
The Addicks have cash to spend after being taken over by Belgian businessman Roland Duchâtelet but sit just three points clear of the relegation zone.
They see Eagles – who has an enviable goalscoring record at Championship level with Wanderers and Burnley – as the ideal man to shoot them towards safety.
Derby County were also rumoured to be monitoring Eagles’ situation, illustrating that the ex-Manchester United man still holds a good reputation in the division despite his rapid fall from grace at the Reebok. After finishing last season as the Whites’ top scorer, Eagles suffered an ankle injury against his former club Burnley on the opening day of the season which hampered his progress until the new year.
He returned to the side at Christmas and appeared briefly to have returned to form, only to fall out of Freedman’s first-team plans again.
Eagles’ absence since the mid-February draw at Millwall has been put down to an eye infection by the club, although the winger has now returned to full training.
He has scored just once for the Whites this season, against Derby County in September, and has only twice been on the winning side in the league in 14 starts.
