Jermaine Beckford has fired a warning shot in the direction of tomorrow’s opponents Birmingham City, insisting his season isn’t finished yet.
Wanderers’ top scorer has scored four goals in his last four meetings with the relegation-haunted Blues and needs just one more strike to get into double figures at the Reebok.
Lee Clark’s side are perhaps hoping for some let-up from their opponents, whose only real incentive is to finish above Watford and climb into 13th at the end of play.
But Beckford blew that theory completely out of the water as he looked ahead to the final game.
“I’ll tell you something, when you are out there on the field there are no friends on the opposite side, you don’t think about points or places, you just want to win,” he said.
“There’s nothing for us to play for but personal pride. But that’s important too.
“You cannot go into any game and think ‘hey, I’ll take it easy’, let them into it and let them take three points. Football just doesn’t work like that.”
If anything, Wanderers should want to put on a show for a home crowd who have spent so much of the season watching on in frustration.
While the Whites’ form is nothing like as chronic as their opponents’ tomorrow lunchtime, their campaign has been exemplified by any number of exasperating draws in front of their own support.
It was quite a different story last weekend as Sheffield Wednesday were put to the sword at Hillsborough, the travelling band of 1,600 fans treated to a glorious day in the South Yorkshire sunshine. Beckford is keen to ensure the outlook remains positive heading into the summer.
“We have got to give them something to cheer about,” he told The Bolton News.
“The away fans enjoyed Sheffield – now let’s take that back home and give them something to shout about there too.
“We’re out of reach in terms of the play-offs and so we haven’t got anything to play for. But as I say, personal pride is a big thing. And every one of us will be trying to cement a place in the manager’s memory for next season now, so we can start with a flourish.
“Yes, unfortunately this good run didn’t start earlier but hopefully we will be able to take the momentum we have built up into the next game and then into next season.”
