Doubts have been cast over Keith Andrews’ move to Huddersfield Town as the midfielder continues to negotiate his way out of Wanderers.
The Irish international is discussing a severance package with the Whites over the last year of his contract.
Huddersfield are keen to sign him – and have offered the incentive of the captain’s armband in an effort to tempt him to the John Smiths Stadium.
But the Yorkshire club are unable to match the midfielder’s considerable salary at Bolton, leaving the deal in the balance as the player seeks compensation for the remaining 13 months of his deal.
Andrews has resigned himself to leaving Wanderers this summer and is also hoping that Brighton resume their interest, having now appointed ex-Liverpool defender Sami Hyypia as their new manager.
Brighton offered a much larger percentage of the player’s salary when they loaned Andrews last season, but it remains to be seen whether the new Finnish boss will be keen on the experienced middle man.
That has opened a window for Huddersfield chief Mark Robins, who is eager to add some midfield muscle and replace outgoing captain Peter Clarke.
Wanderers are under some pressure to clear out some of their fringe players, with £3.2million striker Marvin Sordell another player available to other clubs next season.
The Whites will listen to offers to loan the former England Under-21 international, but Charlton – with whom Sordell spent most of last season on loan – are yet to indicate whether they want to sign him again.
Removing Andrews from the wage bill would free some space in the budget for new signings, in particular top striker target Lukas Jutkiewicz.
