Wanderers fans got more than they bargained for as they watched Chung-Yong Lee’s World Cup campaign get underway late on Tuesday night.

Barely five minutes into the game, BBC commentator Steve Wilson announced that the Korean winger “would probably be leaving Bolton this summer,” causing uproar on the social media networks.

Chung-Yong has been linked with Hull City in the last few weeks but the club have denied that any negotiations have taken place.

Sources confirmed again yesterday that no bids or offers had been made for the 27-year-old, who has 12 months left to run on his contract and is known to be settled in the North West.

The winger played 90 minutes in a solid, if unspectacular 1-1 draw with Russia – and was especially influential in the first half.

Many believe that an impressive World Cup for the former FC Seoul midfielder will prompt a club from Europe or the Premier League to come forward with an offer to take him away from the Macron Stadium.

But until such time Wanderers want to keep a lid on speculation about the player they paid £2.2million for in the summer of 2009.

Chung-Yong looked to be heading for victory against Fabio Capello’s Russia after a shocking blunder by Igor Akinfeev allowed Korea to take the lead 20 minutes from the end.

The Whites star has showed some smart touches in a goalless first half, including one incisive pass that nearly put ex-Arsenal striker Park Chu-young in on goal.

The game livened up when Lee Keun-Ho’s speculative effort slipped through the keeper’s grasp in a situation reminiscent of Rob Green’s famous mistake for England against USA in 2010.

Late substitute Alexander Kerzhakov arrived to salvage a point and save his team-mate’s blushes, however, with a smart finish which made him Russia’s joint leading goalscorer of all time on 26 goals.

Have to say that raised a chuckle.

Perhaps Hipster can enlighten us.

I searched for Chung-yong Lee on Twitter, the only tweet that came up about him leaving was

Did the commentator just say Chung-Yong Lee is expected to leave this summer?

No one replied to him (or whatever it is you do on Twitter).

Absolute uproar!!!

There wasn't uproar It's complete bollocks.

Most people are well aware there's a chance of him leaving so it was hardly a revelation.

got to fill those pages though.

Utter drivel from a lazy commentator and lazy journalist trying to make a story out of nothing. You'd think that during a World Cup there'd be enough real football news to write about but this isn't even a made up football story. It's a made up piece of junk about Twitter for crying out loud. What's next?

Freedman denies posting selfie on FB. Says it's his mother's Haggis

I wouldn't be surprised.
