Dougie Freedman has put contract talks with Adam Bogdan on hold – for now – to give time for speculation over his Wanderers future to subside.

The £2million-rated Hungary international keeper appears to be at a pivotal stage of his seven-year Whites career with strong rumours of interest in him at home and abroad this summer.

Freedman admitted in May he wanted to tie Bogdan down to a longer deal, but speaking to The Bolton News, he revealed talks have now been shelved in the short term.

“Adam has got a year left,” he said. “At the end of the year we’ll either shake his hand and he’ll move on, or he’ll sign a new deal.

“That’s not to say I want to leave it that long before talking to him about a contract, I wouldn’t do that. But you do have to gauge where a player is mentally.

“We had a situation with Chris Eagles last summer – I don’t think it would have helped him mentally to offer a new contract.

“I could probably have guessed the answer, so it might have been in our best interests to leave it, but in Adam’s case with all the speculation flying around I think it’s best to leave talks right now and see where he’s at when we start the season.”

The rumour mill has been working overtime since Bogdan has failed to start a game in pre-season – although sources at the club have put his absence down to a minor injury which saw him slip behind schedule in training.

Interest from German club Mainz was batted away earlier this month after they failed to make an offer, while reports that Championship rivals Fulham have also joined the hunt were dismissed out of hand by Freedman.

“I’ve said it before, some 14-year-old tweets from his bedroom and all of a sudden it’s a story,” he said. “Adam is staying, he’s a big part of what we are doing.”

Having had his fingers burned soon after his arrival as Wanderers boss when Marcos Alonso departed for next to nothing because of an expiring contract, Freedman is anxious not to let others do the same.

Bogdan and Chung-Yong Lee are among those who are out of contract at the end of this season and the Whites boss concedes that some major decisions must be made.

“You want to sign all your best players,” he said. “You go back to Marcos Alonso – we’d made him the best left-back in the division and lost money on him.

“It is frustrating but you have to respect the situation we’re in – Financial Fair Play, what they want, can you afford in certain positions that amount of money, there is a lot to weigh up.

“Bolton fans realise I’m trying to give the place a chance to stabilise but I also want to be successful.”

Meanwhile, Wanderers insist there has been no contact from QPR about midfielder Mark Davies.

Reports at the weekend suggested that Harry Redknapp was eyeing-up a season long loan for the 26-year-old, who is under contract until 2016.

Perhaps this is a situation where there is no money to offer him a new deal with?

If he signed for another club that came after him, he'd get a wage rise (or he wouldn't sign presumably) That puts pressure on the current club to match the potential wage rise to keep him.
If we have no money to match the potential wage rise (and therefore not have the money to offer a new contract) what can we do?
£2 million is <£40k a week for a year and presumably the income would be taxed so in salary terms it's even less. Cost of recruiting a replacement? Fixed costs plus any fee and then salary. Basically there wouldn't be much left out of the £2 million if the replacement was even approaching a similar standing.

When the season gets going we'll have a better understanding of where we're at - maybe the plan is to see how it goes and if there's no change, flog him in January. Huge risk.

The way I read this is Dougie doesn't think he's worth a new contract.

Let's be honest, Bogdan is nothing special - arguably no better than Lonergan. And let's face it, there are plenty of average keepers knocking about that would jump at the chance of first team action at BWFC.

If that was the case, why not cash in on him while it's possible?

Maybe he will if a firm bid comes along. Whatever the reason, it's clear he doesn't rate Bogdan too highly. And rightly so.

So you don't think Mainz 05 put in a serious offer? Perhaps.

No idea, but I'd sell if they do. We can do better.

He was touted as the new Jussi when he came onto the scence but even at his age you can tell he will not get any better than what he is now...IMO anyway, which is a shame because I had high hopes for him.

As said above, their are plenty of other goalkeepers in this league who are just as good if not better - his movement on free kicks is terrible.
