Having seen his pre-season campaign hampered through injury, David Wheater was delighted to be back playing as Wanderers beat Bury to reach the second round of the Capital One Cup on Tuesday evening.

On the verge of an exit from the competition, a stoppage-time Craig Davies penalty kick took the tie into extra-time before a Neil Danns brace secured victory against the Shakers.

And while Wheater admitted that that the team were initially eager to see off the challenge of the League Two side inside the regulation 90 minutes, the defender was pleased to see Wanderers triumph against their local rivals in the end.

“This was my first proper game back since the last game of last season,” said Wheater. “I played an Under-21 game before we played Watford last weekend, but that’s been it.

“It’s nice to be back – none of us were really happy that we had to go to extra-time to get the result, but once we were in it, it was fine and we powered through.

“It was a real battle but that’s what cup football is about. In the end, we got the result that we wanted.

“We made it harder for ourselves than we wanted to but we got the job done at the end of the day.”

Wheater added: “The Bury manager had them up for it and it was a tough game. It was always going to be a difficult game in the cup, especially against local rivals as well, but we got the victory and that’s what matters.

“Any victory gives you a good confidence boost, and beating Bury in the cup is what we needed.

“Getting a win in a tough game like this puts us in good stead for another hard game against Forest on Saturday.”
