Jermaine Beckford shunned individual praise following his all-important goals against Crewe in the Capital One Cup on Tuesday evening.

The striker netted a brace with two clever first-time finishes in the cup tie at Gresty Road, one of which was the winner in extra time.

And having helped book the Trotters’ place in the third round of the competition for the first time since the 2011/12 season, Beckford was hopeful the side could now kick on in league combat.

“It was a real battle and it was a shame it took us as long as it did to get into the game,” he said after the final whistle. “You have to give Crewe credit for that.

“I’ve said it before, it’s always nice to score a goal or two, but it’s better to win the game.

“I wouldn’t have been able to score the goals had the guys not put the ball in the right areas.

“I thought we showed some great character to dig deep in difficult circumstances.

“Unfortunately it took us 120 minutes to get the job done, but we at least got there in the end.

“This is what cup competitions are like. Lower league teams are always going to come and have a real good go and play with freedom.

“Personally, all I can do right now is continue to train and play hard and hopefully I’ll be able to make a contribution to turning the league results around.”
