Funnily enough I thought I'd seen a dead man who turned out not to be!
Some years ago I had occasion to be working on the behalf of a local council in a very dodgy area of town.
I was required to vist a resident in a block of flats known for its drug use.
From experience I use the stairs rather than the lift.
Half way up the stairwell was this youth, laid on the floor with both his arms at 90 degrees to his body but pointing backwards.
Right away I though something was very wrong, as his body was contorted in a totally unnatural way. I did try to wake him by shouting at him and 'rocking' him to and fro with my foot - I wasn't going anywhere near him with my hands or face.
I was convinced he was dead.
I knew that if I reported it I would be required to stay in that location, give a statement and basically write off the best part of my day, all for some wasted smackhead. I saw no sense in doing that at all. I did not know him, I could not help him so why ruin my day just to complete paper work on him?
I went on to finish my call at the flats, returned down the stairwell, past the 'dead' body, who was exactly how I left him with both his arms directly out from the shoulders but pointing behind him.
I thought I'd see or hear something in the local press about a body being found - but they never did!
I can only assume either that reporting the deaths of druggies was no news for this particular town or that the bloke was so high on drugs that it had allowed him to get into that extreme body position and when the drugs had worn off he simply woke up and walked away.
I'm not ashamed of what I did and would do the same again in the circumstances.
What would you have done if the same thing happened to you?
