At the request of Johnny (who Hates Jazz but doesn't know it) I'm starting a thread about all those shit records you bought when you were younger during moments of hormonal madness / temporary insanity.

I had some right stinkers:

Phil Collins
Nik Kershaw
Possibly a Bros record.
Air Supply
etc,

You get the drift.

Come on, spill the beans and if possible try and explain why.

I used to work overtime on a Saturday morning when I was in my early 20s. Finished for 10.30 and straight down the pub, drinking aftershock/absinthe at 2.00 in the afternoon is never a good idea. On the way home stop at HMV.

Wake up Sunday morning with CD's I'll never listen to including

The Best of the Police
The Mull Historical Society (almost a 1 hit wonder)
Everclear (who have actually made some decent songs)
Toploader

And many more that I can't remember off the top of my head.

We didn't buy any records before '67. The first record I ever bought was "Good Vibrations" (we'd got a fancy stereogram and mum treated us to a record each) My brother got "The Carnival is Over" and I've never let him live it down to this day. The second record I got was the Magical Mystery Tour double EP which my parents banned from the stereogram when they were in earshot.
Since then, there are quite a few I look back at and wonder what drugs I was on at the time of purchase including:
Most of Ralph Records output (Chrome, Residents, Tuxedo Moon, MX 80 Sound) bit  weird on reflection but I did have a night out with Snakefinger in Manchester after a gig at the place which was Jillie's.
Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks
Jean Luc Ponty - a man can only take so much electric violin and I'd already had my fill with Flock - although he did some good work with Zappa.
Anything by Genesis although Steve H is a neighbour when he's not touring and a lovely chap
Premiata Forneria Marconi - Italian rock band that seemed great when I spent a summer on an Italian beach with a pretty girl who loved 'em - less so in Bolton.
Disco. I have about 5 disco records from the time and have successfully buried them both in the attic and in my mind although I do believe that one of them is Ring My Bell which is perhaps the most annoying tune of all time. Still like Going Back to My Roots though - great tune. I still have Funkadelic's One Nation but I don't mind it so much as it's worth a few bob.
Mahavishnu's Visions of the Emerald Beyond. I like the band, and Birds of Fire is the ultimate acid trip soundtrack, but this was twiddling for the sake of it and it was the last one of theirs I bought.
Beefheart's early stuff - loved it at the time but it's a bit "meh" nowadays
There are probably a few more turkeys in there but the vinyl is stashed away and I can't remember the whole sordid journey. All the good stuff constitutes around 100 gig on my I pod classic - so the cringeworthy never sees daylight.

My dad was given the K-K-K-Kosset Carpets advert record - one of those wafer thin floppy 45s.

The tune is burnt onto my brain.

You say that as though it's some sort of mitigation or excuse.

It's not.

Go and stand in the corner and put that hat on.

The worst I can think of at the moment is Toni Basil's 'Mickey' although I'm sure there are a few more rotters in the stash in my Mum and Dad's loft.

Luckily, I was brainwashed from an early age and can stand by much of what I bought in my youth. I used to buy most of my stuff at Tracks(?) on Mealhouse Lane(?) by M&S and can remember queueing outside one Saturday morning to get a new Anti-Nowhere League release. Can't imagine it would have been sold out.
