The courts say Parliament has to vote on whether to leave or not!

Parliament must vote on whether the UK can start the process of leaving the European Union, the High Court has ruled.

This means the government cannot trigger Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty - beginning formal discussions with the EU - on its own.

Theresa May says the Brexit referendum and ministerial powers mean MPs do not need to vote, but campaigners argue this is unconstitutional.

The government is expected to appeal.

The prime minister has said she will activate Article 50, formally notifying the EU of the UK's intention to leave, by the end of next March. This follows the UK's decision to back Brexit in June's referendum by a margin of 51.9% to 48.1%.

The EU's other 27 members have said negotiations about the terms of the UK's exit - due to last two years - cannot begin until Article 50 has been invoked.

BBC assistant political editor Norman Smith said, if the court's decision is not overturned, there could be "months and months" of parliamentary hurdles ahead.

The government is expected to appeal against the decision, with a further hearing to be held in the Supreme Court.

More muddying of the water. Great to vote for change, but who knows what it is?
When it's all done and dusted folks aspirations for change won't be met and the pound in their pocket will be worth less than the dollar!!

If you a "Remoaner" like me and you fancy a chuckle, tale a look at the Mail Online's comment section.

There's some gold on there about this already.

Large sections of the Home Counties are exploding with rage as we speak - Brilliant!

"Democracy is dead" says D_Rob of Hyde.

No, mate - It's alive and well thanks to this ruling.

Yes I am a remoaner &  I can well understand less fortunates wanting a change but that would involve having a moral compass throughout society, and that ain't never going to happen!
I've still, 4 months down the line, to find a Brexiter to nail on what they want and expect.

That's simple enough SK, and I assume you haven't been reading the posts on here. Personally, I want the government of this country to take back its sovereignty, and decision making,  without having to kowtow to an unelected European court. The rest, for me, is in the mix.
Also,  'I can well understand less fortunates wanting a change'. Did you really mean to sound so patronising, whilst ignoring all the well educated, etc, people who wanted to leave ? If I've misread that bit, then my apologies.

I'm fully pissed off with the whole milarky and given my age I voted for no change.

"Personally, I want the government of this country to take back its sovereignty, and decision making"
And you think this will actually benefit you?
Hope you don't do any frog impersonations before it does!
As for sounding patronising, I realise folk haven't got the same things as I have in life, if that's patronising then so be it!? It's also reality.

Oddly, given my age, 66, I voted for change, but for my grandchildren, not for myself.
How can letting outside interests run our country benefit us?
Frog impersonations ? Sorry mate, that's over my head.
Fair enough on the 'less fortunate' comment. It came across as only the less fortunate would have voted for Brexit.

Shock horror! The courts, who are only interpreting the law, have confirmed what others have already argued. The referendum was advisory and to quote the Lord Chief Justice "The government does not have power under the Crown's prerogative to give notice pursuant to Article 50 for the UK to withdraw from the European Union."

To add to the fun did anyone see this article on the BBC website?

It's from a Peter Kay joke, when grandad croaks we'll go to Disney land.  That sort of gist. And the kid ses can you impersonate a frog grandad?

We voted leave, i didn't agree with it but we have to accept the result and move on. It's time to get on with it now and stop putting hurdles in the way, it will only damage us further the longer all this uncertainty goes on.

i honestly can't see Parliament voting against leaving Europe as they would face a massive backlash from the British public

I don't actually think Parliament would currently vote to reject the referendum but there is an important point of law involved. Do you really want Prime Ministers arbitrarily deciding that they have the power to do something when the law says they don't.

Also it will be more interesting to see what people think when the terms of Brexit are finally announced. Maybe it will be the Titanic success Boris expects, maybe not, but personally I can't see what harm it would do to consult people when they actually know what it means (no extra £350m for the NHS for instance or the fact that we will still implement and obey virtually all laws passed in the EU but without being consulted first just like Norway).

Whether you voted Brexit or not this is the correct decision by the letter of the law. Parliament won't vote to reject it, it's a just stay of execution for me.

Interesting to see which politicians vote for and against it though.

Whatever happens, there is something beautiful about reading the comments from the Little Englander idiots on the Mail and Telegraph websites, as they explode with fury at this.

"Democracy is dead and we've been shafted by some lefty judges!" they scream.

Erm, actually....you lot were banging on about "taking power back from Europe" and "the right to self-determination" because you were fed up of the EU and all its (perceived) "silly laws".

You wanted British laws handed down by a British Parliament to British judges, didn't you?

Well....this is what it looks like.

Enjoy.
Very Happy

Yes it is amusing but more than a little scary that these people have a vote and understand so little of the constitution.

That was the point I got so lambasted for on here when I made it at the time.

And that's what still irks me when I read about these 17m brave souls who decided to strike a blow for parliamentary democracy in this country with their vote.

At least half of 'em couldn't point to Brussels on a map and would struggle identifying their own MP in a line up.

It was a vote born out of lies and fear which tapped into the psyche of a "certain section of our society", none of whom could be arsed to vote in elections of any kind normally but because they hate foreigners and fell for Farage's bullshit they all waddled off down to the polling station to have their say.

Remember all that bollocks they were screaming about when they discovered that you have to use a pencil?

That proves that none of the fuckers have ever voted before, otherwise they'd have known the drill.

There's a tiny part of me that's still hoping it's not too late and we can still rescue this situation before the real damage is done but I'm not over confident.

I know one knob, very much educated, who ticked Brexit because he never thought the leave situation would occur. What's more, he openly told folk what he'd done. Perhaps Boris was part of his pre-vote dreams?

Soul Kitchen, xmiles & Bread - I think I speak for everyone else when I say go fuck yourselves you condescending wankers. There was a time when people on here could be condescending with humour, but I actually find some of the comments on this thread pretty distasteful.

You seem to be congratulating yourselves for voting to remain in the EU, like you're somehow more intelligent than everyone else. As if. Soul Kitchen is a racist old bigot with the grammatical skills of a brain dead donkey. Bread has already had to issue one grovelling apology this week, and not so long ago he was paying £25 to charity after his claim that BWFC would "be out of business by the end of August" made him a laughing stock. Xmiles, normally a sensible poster, seems to have lost the plot. But what can you expect from someone who is managing to be beaten in the Last Man Standing competition by people who left the site 10 weeks ago.

What a bunch. Hardly the cream of the crop.

With almost any major decision in history comes heartache, the good times don't come easily. It might be a huge disaster, it might be the best thing we ever did....the truth is no one knows, especially the three wankers above.
