Saints sack Adkins!

Southampton have sacked the manager.
He got them promoted, had a bad start in the Premiership but has only lost twice in the last 12 games. He even got them to draw with Chelsea a couple of days ago.
Did he deserve the sack? In my opinion - no. It's not easy getting promoted - and even more difficult to get off to a flying start in the Prem. Even those who do, eventually begin to stumble.
Are clubs too trigger happy with managers in difficult circumstances in showing them the door.
Coyle was given much longer than some of these guys, and we paid thge consequences- but we'd been failing for abot 4 years on the trot.
Is this a function of clueless overseas owners who want to own UK clubs as trophies to flaunt their wealth - and who understand nothing about the emotional investment of fans in their clubs.
I think too many clubs get shut too quickly before allowing their manager to find their feet. I know its a 'results' business- but everybody can't win.

I hope Southampton go down now- I think they've treated Adkins badly.

Nigel Adkins has been dismissed as manager of Southampton and has been replaced by Mauricio Pochettino.

Adkins joined Southampton in September 2010 on a three-year contract when they were third from bottom in League One.

The former Scunthrope coach guided them to back-to-back promotions, first to the Championship and then to the Premier League where they began the season with a 3-2 defeat at Manchester City.

"Whilst we acknowledge the contribution Nigel has made during the past two years, for the Club to progress and achieve our long-term targets a change was needed.

"Mauricio is a well-respected coach of substantial quality who has gained a reputation as an astute tactician and excellent man manager. I have every confidence that he will inspire our talented squad of players to perform at the highest possible level."

Seems very harsh IMO considering where they are now to where they were when he first took over.

I think it's a farce to be honest, from bottom of league 1 to a half decent prem team, to sack him now is a disgrace.

This has got to be one of the craziest sackings in football history.

Successive promotions, doing ok this season, some good young players.....and they sack him and replace him with some foreigner with no experience of English football.

I hope they get relegated.

Cases like this where the manager has no reason to be sacked, I honestly think the PFA/FA should step in, not that it will ever happen.

He's a top notch manager and would replace him with Dougie in a second.

They're just crackers these foreign owners.

I tend to echo what everyone else has said. These foreign owners really do appear clueless at times. The step up to the Premiership is not an easy one but Adkins is one of the more promising young English managers.

I can't see him being out of work for long. Didn't Southampton poach him from Scunthorpe in the first place ?

If I was a Saints fan I would be seething.

Bit of a surprise that one. Sure he'll be well-compensated. Maybe the new manager is well-connected to find quality bargains to keep the Saints afloat.

I have never heard of Mauricio Pochettino. Probably a mate of the owners.

Remember when Newcastle sacked Houghton and they went mental, then they challenged for a top 4 place.... kinda went quiet after that.

Don't fancy this Argentinian guy to keep them up though, he's hardly experienced and I got the impression Adkins was very popular with the players, can't imagine they'll be too impressed.

Another case of owners who haven't got the first clue about football making stupid decisions.
