Wanderers are close to pulling off the double signing of highly-rated striker Max Clayton and veteran keeper Paddy Kenny.

Dougie Freedman has negotiated an incentive-based deal for Crewe striker Clayton after the League One club looked set to lose him for a pittance to Danish outfit FC Midtjylland.

The 20-year-old had been offered a new contract by the Railwaymen, who were holding out for £1million if he signed for another English club.

But The Bolton News understands that the contract he signs with Wanderers includes hefty sell-on fees, which could benefit Crewe in the long-run.

England youth international Clayton had trained with the club before looking into a move to Denmark and has also had spells at Sunderland and Everton.

Injury to Adam Bogdan has also forced Freedman into signing a stop-gap goalkeeper in the form of ex-Sheffield United and Leeds United stopper Paddy Kenny.

The 36-year-old had his contract paid up at Elland Road in the summer and arrives on a short-term deal to provide cover for Andy Lonergan, who came in to keep the club’s first clean sheet of the season in a 0-0 draw with Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.

Kenny played in the North West for Bury between 1998 and 2002, making 133 appearances for the Shakers and helping them into the second tier.

Sadly this tells me that the board are going to stick by Dougie if they are going to back him in the signing of Clayton.

Clayton will be absolute shit I guarantee you. When a Crewe player is any good the big clubs come sniffing.

When they are shite Bolton fight with FC Midtjylland for his signature.

No, it doesn't, we've just signed Ross Fitzsimons from Palace as Goal keeping cover.

It's to cheer up the dressing room and give them something to laugh at.

Max Clayton isn't exactly the most prolific striker in the village, which is a worry.

is this lad at Crewe out of contract? Can't see how we could sign him otherwise, as for Paddy Kenny, he was always a good keeper even for a fat lad. Didn't he keep Lonergan out of the Leeds team?

He is. Refused a new offer so would have been a tribunal matter if no agreement could be arrived at.

So is this a permanent signing and not a loan?

It's not clear.

If it's a loan, £300k seems a lot. If it's a signing the price is about right seeing as he's not very prolific and not very big for a striker although he has got the skill and control level that e.g. Beckford and Cavies lack. Perhaps he might add something to the mix - I'd be surprised if he was loaned out though despite Dougie apparently amassing players "for the future".

Paddy Kenny is close to joining Championship outfit Bolton Wanderers.
The 36-year-old free agent is to sign a short term contract at the Macron Stadium.
Kenny, who left Leeds United in the summer, will provide cover for Andy Lonergan at Bolton with Adam Bogdan facing two months on the sidelines because of a finger problem.

Bolton manager Dougie Freedman said: 'Paddy Kenny is a very experienced player. We have had a difficult time last week with Adam Bogdan’s freakish injury so Paddy is going to come in on a short-term contract.'

Bolton are also close to agreeing compensation with Crewe for Max Clayton. The 20-year-old free agent has been training with the club.
Clayton trained with Sunderland during pre-season but was unable to agree terms with the Black Cats.
