Preview: Blackpool v Bolton

SETTING THE SCENE

Following back-to-back home wins before the international break, Neil Lennon clashes with Lee Clark for the second time since his arrival at Macron Stadium as Bolton Wanderers make the short trip to Blackpool.

The Whites, who will be wearing their new green third choice kit in support of Blesma for the first time, boast the superior record in this fixture, while they have tasted defeat against the Tangerines just once since 1990.

Meanwhile, Blackpool currently lie bottom of the Championship with one victory to their name this season, leaving Bolton keen to inflict further damage on the hosts as they look to build on their positive start under Lennon, having won four of his six games in charge so far.

TEAM NEWS

Mark Davies (knee) will definitely miss out after Neil Lennon confirmed the midfielder was set for a lengthy spells on the side-lines in his pre-match press conference.

Darren Pratley is available again after being suspended for Wanderers’ win over Wigan Athletic, while Adam Bogdan (finger) returns to the first team fold after recovering from injury.

Marc Tierney (leg) had an operation during the international break and remains a long-term absentee.

LAST BLACKPOOL XI (v Leeds United, L 3-1)

Lewis, Daniels, Clarke, Dunne, Blackman (O’Hara 17), Perkins, Orlandi (Ranger 45), Lundstram (Mellis 69), Murphy, Lenihan, Miller.

ONE TO WATCH

Joining Blackpool on loan from Norwich City earlier this month, England Under-20s international Jacob Murphy made an instant impact for the Tangerines, scoring on his debut in a 2-2 draw with Fulham.

One half of the highly-rated Murphy twins at Carrow Road, Jacob was a member of the Norwich side, alongside brother Josh, that beat Chelsea to win the FA Youth Cup in 2013.

After making his debut for the Canaries last season against Fulham in the FA Cup, the winger spent a month on loan at Swindon Town before finishing the campaign with Southend United.

LAST TIME WE WERE HERE (Blackpool 0-0 Bolton, 1 October 2013)

Wanderers became the first team to prevent Blackpool from scoring last season when the two sides fought out a 0-0 draw at Bloomfield Road.

The hosts started brightly with Alex Baptiste having to be alert to clear Ricardo Fuller’s cross-cum-shot off the line, while they also had a goal disallowed for offside.

However, one-way traffic it was anything but as Jermaine Beckford hit the post for the Whites before Tim Ream fired over from close-range, leaving both sides rueing missed opportunities as they were forced to settle for a point at the final whistle.

Seems that in the years around WWI a few league clubs used to go there for training on the green near the windmill.

What a rubbish result, lucky to get a draw against the bottom of the league.

Lennon, sort the shabby wankers out.

Report: Blackpool 1-1 Bolton

IN BRIEF

Wanderers were forced to settle for a share of the spoils in a hotly contested derby against Blackpool at Bloomfield Road.

Following a goalless first half, the hosts did open the scoring with 15 minutes remaining through Jacob Murphy’s free-kick, but Lee Chung-Yong soon had the Whites back on level terms with a drilled angled effort.

Bolton did push late on in a bid to take all three points from the clash, but their efforts were to prove fruitless as the game ended all square.

TEAM NEWS

There was one change for Wanderers, with Darren Pratley replacing Mark Davies in the starting line-up, while former Wanderer Chris Eagles lined up against his old employers in his first appearance for the Seasiders.

FIRST HALF

It was a tempestuous start to proceedings, with both sides pushing forward in their numbers inside the opening minutes of the clash.

Real clear cut chances were few and far between however, with each defence standing firm.

Wanderers were looking menacing on the attack however and looked certain to test Joe Lewis with eight minutes on the clock, but Jamie O’Hara was on his guard to hook Liam Feeney’s cross away from danger.

Blackpool themselves were also enjoying some pressure, with Eagles forcing Andrew Lonergan to dive low to keep out his curling effort from just inside the box.

Tim Ream almost opened his account for the Whites in style in the 14th minute as he turned inside his man on the edge of the box, only to see Lewis parry his sting long distance effort away from a crowded penalty area.

Having struggled to really test Wanderers early on, the hosts almost opened the scoring in the 19th minute as Jacob Mellis’ thunderous effort took a wicked deflection on its way to goal, but the crossbar was to be Bolton’s saviour with his shot crashing off the woodwork.

It was Wanderers’ time to hit the woodwork soon after, with Lee Chung-Yong’s powerful strike through a crowded penalty area smashing against the post with Lewis beaten.

Max Clayton, visibly buoyed by his goal against Wigan last time out, tried his luck from 20 yards shortly after the half hour mark, but the Blackpool keeper was on his guard to deny the young striker with a smart save.

As then half drew to its conclusion, both Ream and Neil Danns tried their luck from distance, while an unmarked Donervon Daniels squandered a glorious opportunity as he fired over from four yards out as the first period ended goalless.

SECOND HALF

The hosts started the second half brightly, with substitute Andrea Orlandi unleashing from distance with two minutes gone, but Lonergan was on his guard to collect his effort.

Wanderers were soon back on the front foot however, with Craig Davies proving himself a nuisance amongst the Blackpool defence early on, including squandering a close range header at the far post.

The introduction of Jay Spearing in place of Feeney just before the hour mark saw a change of approach for Wanderers, while Pratley was replaced by Joe Mason.

Both sides were really struggling to test either goalkeeper, with Jacob Murphy’s fizzled shot failing to hit the target with 22 minutes remaining.

With the clock ticking down, Wanderers were dominating possession and looked set to find the back of the net as Danns collected Spearing’s through ball in the six yard area, but a number of Blackpool bodies ensured that the midfielder’s effort lacked power.

Having failed to test Lonergan throughout the second period however, the hosts proceeded to open the scoring with 15 minutes to go as Jacob Muprhy thundered home a free-kick from just outside the penalty area.

Desperate to pull themselves back onto level terms, Bolton threw themselves forward in numbers and were rewarded with eight minutes left as Chung-Yong drilled home from a tight angle to send the travelling Bolton faithful into raptures.

With Wanderers back in the clash, Rob Hall was thrown into the mix in a bid to find a winning goal for the Whites and with four minutes of added time indicated, the pressure was only heading in one direction.

With time running out, Bolton did enjoy chances to win it late on as Danns’ header flew narrowly wide of the upright while Mason came within inches of collecting the ball from six yards out, but their efforts were in vain as the game ended all square.

So the Lennon honeymoon is over. Once again our away form is pitiful, doesn't seem to matter who is in charge.

Bottlers.

I am honestly laying at least some of the blame on the kit.

Noble as it is to support BLESMA, it's a fucking stupid idea to try and play football in a strip that is fashioned from a material which is specifically designed to confuse the eye and make it difficult to spot each other on the pitch.

Whichever genius suggested it wants fucking with a sharp stick.

I thought there was a lot to be pleased about today. We played better football, had way more possession and when we went one down our heads didn't drop as they would have done a few weeks ago. We hit back and did so quickly. If anything we were unlucky not to win the match.

That said there were two things wrong for me. Our finishing still isn't good enough and for the first twenty minutes or so we looked rusty and even a little bit harried. Once we settled down we took over the game but we really are short of a real striker and that showed today more than at any time in Neil's tenure so far in my opinion.

One decision of Neil's mystified me. Why did he take Pratley off? We were in complete command until he brought Spearing on and within minutes the twerp gave away a free kick that gave Blackpool the lead and in my opinion cost us 2 points. I think that was the first tactical mistake I've seen Neil Lennon really make. Clayton looked pretty promising but Cravies for all his industry and running didn't seem to pose much of a threat today. Personally I would have brought Mason on for Cravies and left Pratley on all game as it was easily his best performance so far and he bossed the midfield. (Words I never thought I'd type).

Certainly missed Mavies today ....and unloading Beckford might have been a bit hasty.
No through balls today and the good old hoof was on display again.  Overall I thought we were the better team but only just.  A point is better than nowt and we remain outside of the bottom three albeit on Goal diff.

Thought that was poor today, never once took control of the game, I like Clayton but his first touch at this point is very very poor, needs work.

far too little emphasis on getting forward down the wings too, and I didn't think we showed any urgency to press them high up like we did against Wigan.

disappointing but at least we didn't lose.

I can only speak from listening to it on the radio, so I can't give much of an opinion - but we started slowly and finished the first and started the second half well.

To be fair to Lennon he took Feeney off for Spearing, which wasn't the most unusual sub of all considering Feeney was having a poor game - he took Pratley off for Mason, so that was an attacking substitution if anything.
