The only point that we probably differ on is that I think part of the problem in this country is that for too long we have not just tolerated but encouraged the concept that all cultural behaviours and beliefs are equally valid and acceptable. Well I don't think that genital mutilation of children and treating females as inferior to men is acceptable. Nor do I think that immigrants who beat their children should be treated differently from anyone else - unlike this judge:

Near impossible to say if our tolerant attitude has helped or hindered us. Judging by the situation in Australia who've gone the opposite way there isn't a huge amount of difference.
