Like most things in life it's good to have a balance - sites like TW who have banned every fake account they perceived are imo as dull as fuck.  However sites that have no limit to them have destroyed themselves - Bolton Evening News Forum (closed down), the official club forum (closed down) Burnden Aces (in ruins), etc.

When we first started the site it was thought that a few fake accounts would help 'kick' the forum off by making it look busier than it might otherwise appear and add a bit of humour to the site.  It was agreed that once the forum had got established these fake accounts would be withdrawn and 'real' people be posting instead.  However someone once again carried things far too far, using these fake accounts to post stuff we simply didn't want on this site, until it got to a time when the rest of us behind the scenes said that enough was enough and finally an end was put to these 'officialish' fake accounts.

Thats not to say other long standing accounts weren't fake as well - or had well known posters from other forums posting on here in de facto.

All 'known' fake accounts have long since ended - but it's hard to prove that other accounts are fakes - it's easy to mask ip addresses, which really is our only tool to detect them.

We aren't here to stop people's fun and a few good fake accounts can add to a forum rather than detreact from it, the problem is when they are used to abuse or 'attack' people, or otherwise be anti-social in behaviour.

However the old saying is true in that it does indeed 'take two to tango'.  A fake account simply can't work in isolation.  If no one reacts to it, it simply becomes to look pathetic and embarassing - look at the massive fail the fake 'green and white' account on BA as become.  So much time and effort put into it, for it to be almost universally shunned by the few others left posting on the forum.

I strongly suspect we have more than a few fake accounts on here - the majority probably adding to the site - but when one or other of them starts to become rogue then surely it is better to ignore them rather than lead  a personal crusade against them.

At the end of the day their aim is to pull someones chain and if they get a reaction - they have won.

I think a small number of people need to stop letting personal grievances get in the way of enjoying this forum.  What's the point in getting wound up by someone you don't even know, over nothing much really?

We are a bunch of STRANGERS posting on an INTERNET forum talking about a GAME of football.

Why the fuck anybody would want to wind people up - or be wound up - is beyond my understanding.

Maybe its about time we all act our 'real' age for a while, eh?
