As Bolton Wanderers endured a day to forget against Nottingham Forest at The City Ground, Neil Danns conceded the result was nothing less than the Whites deserved.

After failing behind to two early goals, Adam Le Fondre had given Bolton hope from the penalty spot. However, any hopes of a comeback were extinguished when Matt Mills was dismissed for a second bookable offence, with Forest going on to score a further two goals to wrap up victory.

But despite having also seen Andrew Lonergan and Tim Ream stretchered off through injury, Danns acknowledged that the Trotters had only themselves to blame for the manner of their defeat.

“We can’t make any excuses, we didn’t start well and weren’t at our best,” said the 32-year-old. “We know that and have to hold our hands up and say we weren’t at the races.

“It was a very eventful game with us having two men stretchered off and a man sent off. It wasn’t the way we wanted it to go and we’re really disappointed.

“We didn’t have the greatest start. We went 2-0 down but we managed to gather ourselves and get the goal before at half-time.

“Going out for the second half, we were confident we could get the result but unfortunately we’ve had a man sent off. I thought it was a bit soft, but it gave us a mountain to climb from thereon in.”

Danns continued: “All our plans for the second half went straight out the window and we had to regroup with Emile moving to centre-back.

“It wasn’t ideal and we were chasing the game from that moment. Everything just seemed to go from bad to worse.

“However, we have shown previously that we can bounce back after suffering defeat. We have character in the dressing room.

“We’ll be going out no different against Middlesbrough on Tuesday - we are going there to win the game. It’ll be tough because they are doing really well in the league but we know we need to get a result.”
