She used to work in a diner
Never saw a woman look finer
I used to order just to watch
her float across the floor
She grew up in a small town
Never put her roots down
Daddy always kept movin',
so she did too.

Somewhere on a desert highway
She rides a Harley-Davidson
Her long blonde hair
flyin' in the wind
She's been runnin' half her life
The chrome and steel she rides
Collidin' with
the very air she breathes
The air she breathes.

You know it ain't easy
You got to hold on
She was an unknown legend
in her time
Now she's dressin' two kids
Lookin' for a magic kiss
She gets the far-away look
in her eyes.

Somewhere on a desert highway
She rides a Harley-Davidson
Her long blonde hair
flyin' in the wind
She's been runnin' half her life
The chrome and steel she rides
Collidin' with the very
air she breathes
The air she breathes.

You were trying to lull me into a false sense of security. Evil or Very Mad
I could drop dead at any minute you know.

Saw them at Silverwell Street Sports Centre in Bolton in about '89.

Strange experience.

Joni Mitchell, singing about the nuns that used to run the Magdalene Laundries for "fallen women" in Ireland.

These bloodless brides of Jesus,
If they'd just once glimpsed their groom,
Then they'd know, and they'd drop the stones [/size]
Concealed behind their rosaries.
They wilt the grass they walk upon;
They leech the light out of a room.
They'd like to drive us down the drain
At the Magdalene Laundries.

Impossible to pick the best, I'll just list some that spring to mind.

"Like a soul without a mind, in a body without a heart, I'm missing every part."

"This is a low, but it won't hurt you, when you're alone, it will be there with you finding ways to stay."

"Love, love is a verb. Love is a doing word."

"I'll take a quite life, a handshake of carbon monoxide, and no alarms and no surprises."

"Dr. Baker phoned me again later that day. Said he cried and he really sounded out of it. His wife was dead and his dog was dead and misery planned inside his head."

"The hazy fog over the Bull Ring. The lazy ways the birds sing. A new baby's born every day. Few men may be scorned today. But look at things the other way, cos it may well be your final day. And then the crowds roar, they slay, they all say. I produce this using only my bare wit. Gimme a jungle, a garage beat and admit defeat."

"Save me, save me from tomorrow. I don't want to sail with this ship of fools."

"This wheel's on fire, rolling down the road. Best notify my next of kin. This wheel shall explode!"

"Though you might hear laughing, spinning swinging madly across the sun. It's not aimed at anyone, it's just escaping on the run. And but for the sky there are no fences facing.
And if you hear vague traces of skipping reels of rhyme, to your tambourine in time, it's just a ragged clown behind. I wouldn't pay it any mind, it's just a shadow you're seeing that he's chasing."

"We are stardust. Billion year old carbon. We are golden. Caught in the devil's bargain. And we've got to get ourselves back to the garden."

Electric Relaxation Tribe, Seaman's was a famous American furniture store apparently

Phife Dawg -

If my mom don't approve, then I'll just elope
Let me save the little man from inside the boat
Let me hit it from the back, girl I won't catch a hernia
Bust off on your couch, now you got Seaman's Furniture

I know something about opening windows and doors
I know how to move quietly to creep across creaky wooden floors
I know where to find precious things in all your cupboards and drawers
Slipping the clippers through the telephone wires
The sense of isolation inspires
Inspires me
I like to feel the suspense when i'm certain you know i am there
I like you lying awake, your bated breath charging the air
I like the touch and the smell of all the pretty dresses you wear
Intruders happy in the dark
Intruder come
Intruder come and he leave his mark, leave his mark.

Plus about a million party points for the World Party reference - saw them supporting U2 at Wembley in 87 and they were brilliant. Massively underrated in my view. Mike Scott gets all the plaudits nowadays for The Waterboys but Karl Wallinger was a top songwriter in his own right.

I think my dad will back you up there.

I must admit I only know a few World Party songs (all from the Best in Show compilation album). Is It Like Today is another cracker. She's The One is a good song but hard to listen to without thinking of Robbie Williams sadly.
