Zach Clough is keeping his feet on the ground despite comparison’s to Barcelona’s Lionel Messi.
The Tameside-born striker is tipped for big things after plundering six goals in 10 appearances before a dislocated shoulder ended his season.
Clough’s sensational arrival on the senior scene made him the talk of the Championship, not just Wanderers’ fans.
Trotters boss Neil Lennon handed him a new contract after barely a handful of games for the first team.
His campaign-ending injury against Reading on March 3 was the only downside of his meteoric rise.
“It’s been fantastic, to be honest,” said Clough. “The fans have been brilliant since I made the breakthrough.
“It was so surreal to hear myself being talked about on Match of the Day. To see my face on TV and have Gary Lineker praising me was just a bit mad.
“However, my family will keep me grounded. I like to think I have got both feet on the ground anyway and that’s down to my dad especially. Besides, I am still living at home at the moment.
“So, my parents make me wash the pots every night! There’s no special treatment for me.”
Clough has received plenty of treatment from Bolton’s medical staff to ensure he’s ready for next season.
“I’ve never had a first-team pre-season before so it’s something I am really looking forward to,” he added.
“It’s something that will hopefully stand me in good stead for next season and make sure I’m ready to go for the first game of the new campaign.
“It’s been a mad year. Last year when the lads were in Sweden I was with the Under-21s at Lancaster University.
“It’s been a crazy turnaround but that’s what football is all about and we love it.”
