I looked after my niece and nephew during the week and because I don't own any gaming consoles they brought a selection of games with them. One of them was the classic Operation. You know, the one where you try and remove body parts without touching the sides.

Anyway, we're playing Operation and it's fooking easy. Whoever went first was generally pulling all 11 body parts out without much difficulty. I was convinced they'd made the game easier since I'd last played it when I was a kid. My nephew mocked me saying kids were just better co-ordinated these days. Bullshit I said.

So here I am at my parents house and I've just been in the loft to dig out my old version of Operation and without even playing it I could tell the holes were much smaller than the modern version. A lot smaller in fact.

I am outraged. Why is everything made so easy for the kids of today? Why can't things be difficult? Surely failure is part of the learning curve of growing up?

Twats!

You're obsessed by Clive. He has made me promise not to mention him again.

Once, many moons ago, there was a time on this site when you could have a serious conversation about the issues of the day.

I'm 100% with Nat on this.

When I was a kid, if you were brave enough to climb the rocket-shaped climbing frame in Moss Bank Park, you risked serious injury if you fell off.

Why?

Because the ground underneath it was concrete.

Not that spongy rubber stuff they use for playgrounds nowadays, proper rock-hard concrete.

I knew the risks and it made it all the more appealing to the 8 year old me.

Ok, 37 years on, I still can't bend my left arm all the way up and touch my shoulder and I have no sensation in two fingers on my left hand after I fell off and dislocated / fractured my elbow, but I honestly believe that I am a better person for it.

In twenty years we'll probably have a nation of feckless adults who cry every time they get a paper cut.

We've gone soft.

Couldn't agree more, the dangers are no different today than they were 20, 30, 40 years ago. But kids of today are being brought up in a bubble. Honestly, in the last 5 years have you ever seen a kid climb a tree?

I think we've got harder, records are always being broken, people are fitter, living longer, and young people at 18 are not scared to start their own thing.

You're missing the point. So did kids 20, 30 or 40 years ago.

Not many did as they do today, not at 5 or 6.

They get brought up in a tougher world today.
