Neil Lennon has lashed out at Sheffield Wednesday for leaving Mark Davies in the lurch.

Wanderers had prepared themselves to lose their creative midfielder in midweek, agreeing to the Owls’ request that he did not face them at Hillsborough.

But as Davies sat with his future team-mates in an executive box during the 3-2 defeat, advisors to the board at Wednesday were warning their club to pull out of the deal.

Lennon is glad to have the 28-year-old back in the fold but admits he does not know what he state of mind will be for tomorrow’s clash with Nottingham Forest.

“He may not start but he’ll be in the squad,” he told The Bolton News. “We’ll have a chat with him and see what he’s feeling about things. I don’t know if he’s disappointed or not; I think he’s quite happy here. But it’s needs must at this stage for the club.”

Most of Wednesday’s £700,000 offer was being written off in severance pay to the former Wolves star, who was also owed outstanding wages for November.

The Whites are having to cut costs despite a deal being imminent to sell car parking land adjoining the stadium, which will give them some breathing room to get through the next couple of months unscathed.

But away from the finances, Lennon was disappointed to have lost a key player for two games, including the FA Cup trip to Eastleigh.

“From our point of view we were told that the move was called off on medical grounds – but he never had a medical,” he said.

“We lost him for two games. It dragged on and on and then Sheffield Wednesday pulled out. We’re not very happy about it at all.”
