Conor Wilkinson came off the bench to make his Portsmouth debut as they ended the regular Sky Bet League Two season with a home defeat against champions Northampton Town.

With a place in the play-offs already secured and the automatic promotion places out of reach, Pompey had only personal pride to play for at Fratton Park.

Sidelined since March because of injury, the Republic of Ireland Under-21s international made his return in the 69th minute with the scores tied at 1-1, and the hosts down to ten men.

Jack Whatmough's own goal had opened the scoring for Northampton, only for Kal Naismith to level the scores shortly after the break moments after Kieron Freeman had been dismissed.

And their man disadvantage eventually proved costly as James Collins netted a late winner for the visitors to seal a 2-1 victory.

Portsmouth now face Plymouth Argyle in the play-offs, looking to reach the final at Wembley and in turn join the Cobbers in the third tier.

Meanwhile in Sky Bet League One, Hayden White's Blackpool were unable avoid relegation as a heavy 5-1 defeat at Peterborough United sealed their fate.

The defender completed the full 90 minutes for the Tangerines, who needed to win to stand any chance of survival and got off to the perfect start as Jacob Blyth headed the Seasiders into an early lead.

However, it all went wrong for Blackpool in the second half as Peterborough stormed back with a Marcus Maddison penalty, a Jon Taylor hat-trick and a further strike from Shaquile Coulthirst.

Also needing Fleetwood Town to lose, the Cod Army beat Crewe Alexandra 2-0 to consign further misery on the Tangerines.

Elsewhere, Liam Feeney completed 90 minutes as Ipswich Town ended the Sky Bet Championship season with a 1-0 victory over Derby County.

Having already missed out on a play-off place, David McGoldrick's first half penalty clinched victory for the Tractor Boys as they finished the season in seventh place.

Over in Italy, Francesco Pisano completed 78 minutes for Avellino as they drew 1-1 at home to Como.
