Phil Parkinson has urged his history boys to be “relentless” as they look to maintain a perfect start to the League One season today against Fleetwood.
Wanderers could match their best start at any level for 82 years if they claim victory at the Macron Stadium this afternoon.
Parkinson – who has already set a 15-year high with results so far – has challenged the Whites to live up to their billing as table toppers.
“It’s a good goal for us, a great target,” he told The Bolton News. “If come 5pm on Saturday we can say we have achieved the club’s best start in 80-odd years then I’d be delighted.
“But right now I just want the same manner of performance we had on Wednesday night at Bristol. We’ve got to be relentless in our pursuit to win football games. You can’t go 80 per cent and expect to be successful.
“This game won’t take care of itself. We have got to show that we want the win more than Fleetwood do.”
Former Fleetwood striker Jamie Proctor is an injury worry going into the game after reporting some tightness in his hamstring yesterday.
Parkinson also confirmed Max Clayton will be rested for at least another week after discovering some swelling in his knee.
“Max went to see a specialist early last week who did the operation on his knee and he was happy with everything. But he keeps getting fluid on the knee, and when that happens, there’s a reason for it,” he said.
“We’ve just got to take the workload off him at the moment and build him back up. I don’t think it’s anything for him to worry about at the moment, or for us, but equally it’s frustrating because he’s a good player and this is a big season for him.
“He has worked hard over the summer and he’s a very popular lad in and around the training ground. We’ll take a step back with him for now and then hopefully he’ll be fine in a week or so.”
Fleetwood may not be one of English football’s more traditional names but Parkinson expects them to be among the movers and shakers in League One this season.
“Fleetwood are perceived as a small club because of the stadium but they have an owner who has backed them all the way up the leagues,” he said.
“They have had resources but it has to be spent wisely and theirs is a great story.
“They will be expecting to be a force in this division this year.”
