Report: Chesterfield 1-0 Bolton

IN BRIEF

Wanderers slipped to defeat at the Proact Stadium as a first half goal from Liam O’Neil proved to be enough to thwart Phil Parkinson’s men.

Despite creating a multitude of chances throughout the game and dominating large swathes, Wanderers weren’t decisive in front of goal and paid the ultimate price to O’Neil’s strike.

TEAM NEWS

Wanderers started with the same 11 that demolished Gillingham 4-0 at Macron Stadium in front of the Sky cameras on Monday evening.

Gary Madine, buoyed by three goals in two games, continued to lead the line, ably supported by the attacking trifecta of Sammy Ameobi, Zach Clough and Josh Vela who have all been clinical in front of goal during recent matches.

Over 2,000 fans travelled down from Lancashire to get behind the White and were in fine voice throughout the contest.

FIRST HALF

The visitors’ attacking intent was apparent within seconds of the kick off and a smart passage of playing involving quick, sharp passing resulted in Vela narrowly volleying over Lloyd Allinson’s cross bar barely two minutes into the game.

A Clough drive from distance, trying to catch Allinson off-guard, was stopped by the Spireites’ keeper. But it was clear that Wanderers wanted to get an early goal.

The diminutive front man then went inches wide after good link up play on the right between Ameobi and Wilson.

Allinson thwarted Clough once again when he caught the Denton destroyer’s 25 yard free kick.

The opening goal came in the most unlikely of circumstances when Liam O’Neil caught everybody by surprised as he curled his effort past Ben Alnwick. Chesterfield hadn’t posed any attacking threat whatsoever up until that moment.

The goal spurred the hosts and even captain Gary Liddle tried an audacious attempt from distance off Ched Evans’ centre.

Madine went close to equalising when he snapshot had Allinson diving at full strength but Wanderers’ early tempo had been stymied by Chesterfield’s resurgence.

Clough should have equalised just before the break when he ran the length of the Chesterfield half with only Allinson to beat. However, the imposing keeper managed to block the chance to preserve his side’s slender lead going into the break.

SECOND HALF

The tempo wasn’t as frenetic as the opening minutes of the first period, as the hosts strove to maintain their lead and frustrate Wanderers.

Ameobi, whose stunning goal against Gillingham put the gloss on Wanderers victory on that occasion, saw a tame effort gathered by Allinson.

The hosts won the odd corner which kept the Wanderers back four on their guard as they battled in vain to get back into the tie.

Clough spurned another chance when put through by Thorpe. Although under pressure, he should have done better with his right foot as the ball blazed over the bar.

Chris Taylor was the first Wanderers substitute when he replaced Tom Thorpe in the 73rd minute.

Wanderers were getting into good attacking positions but just couldn’t get their efforts on target. Ameobi was another one who should have done better from 18 yards out.

The big attacker went closer a few moments later when his left footed curler – which has served him so well recently - went narrowly wide beyond the diving Allinson.

With time running out, Wanderers were getting more frustrated with unnecessary free-kicks being given away.

Parkinson made his last throw of the dice with five minutes remaining when he brought on Keshi Anderson and Jamie Proctor for Lawrie Wilson and Zach Clough.

With the game in its dying embers, captain Spearing summed up Wanderers' fortunes by blazing over when he charged on to the loose ball.

just got back and it's a difficult one to sum up, everything just seemed to be 10% off where it has been the last few games, we where slower closing down, our passes often where wide of the mark and any chances we created we failed to test the keeper.

A real all round poor display, the most worrying thing was that you could see this at half time and yet Parkinson persisted with the same players and when a change eventually did come it was the usual Chris Taylor on for one of the midfielders. He did eventually bring Proctor and Anderson on but it was far too late and for some reason Anderson seemed to play almost a deep midfield role and never got into an attacking area of the pitch.

Playing as bad as we did if we had a natural finisher we still could have nicked a point if not three, found myself wondering what has happened to Clayton?

God we were bad. None of them turned up, spearing sloppy in possession, Ameobi looked pissed, Vela invisible and clough was the worst of the lot, missed two clear chances to equalise and his overall attitude was rather petulant i noticed.

Very disappointing infront of a fantastic following

Just throwing this out there, but what the fuck does Parkinson see in Chris Taylor? he is not a footaller I have played at a decent level, and can see phases of games where players contribute, but never have I seen anything positive from that piece of shit, he's clearly doing something in training, but plays like a pussy in game, all in all he's dogshit.

I  Would usually agree, he did have some impact when he came on.

We seemed to go up a gear and look a bit better in midfield, suspect that is because he took Thorpe off and with Taylor further up the park we where pressing sooner.

I don't understand why he picks Thorpe ahead of Derek.

Thorpe will be back off to Rotherham at some point, surely it's better to pick a player we own especially when he's been superb this season.

Because Thorpe is playing well.

He's done ok, but he's off in a month or two. Would make more sense to pick the players we own.

Derek is a better player.

How do you know there isn't a deal to extend the loan?

it was a poor performance but we had to lose sometime and as long as they get back to winning ways on Boxing Day it won't cause too much damage.
Facebook is full of doom merchants because we lost one game, lots of massive overreactions, it's just a blip.

He'll still be on loan. All we're doing is putting him in the shop window, it won't benefit us.

Loans are usually extended with the option of making it permanent

Bollocks, I said a few days ago we still look mentally weak away from home, might be our undoing

I think Thorpe is hear for the season and then out of contract, Anderson referred to one that was a transfer turned into a loan because of the embargo.
I think that was the Thorpe one

I just think Derek is a better passer, and when you don't create/score many goals his one killer pass per game could change things.

That we agree on, DERIK is the better player but you don't change a winning side

I also think Derik is a better all round player and we also won when he was in the side
