At the request of my 7 year old I recently set up a Facebook profile and ventured out into this crazy world. I've swapped messages with a few old school friends and the odd ex-colleague, but they've always been people I had a strong connection with i.e. good friends at school or worked closely in an office. But in recent weeks I've been amazed at the number of strangers that have wanted to be friends through Facebook. Ok, not total strangers, we may have attended the same school or college, but we weren't friends and in some cases we never even spoke.

This morning was a prime example. I received a friend request from a woman called Claire who went to the same secondary school as me. Apart from the fact we weren't even in the same year, I know for a fact we never spoke a word to each other. Yet she sends me a message as though we've been best buddies for the last 20 years. I find this very strange. Am I alone in receiving Facebook friend requests that make no sense?

Someone added me as a friend because we had 10 friends in common.

Nope I have friend requests from someone who I hated at school and they hated me but for some reason they thought Facebook was some sort of healing ritual and acted like we were best buds.

I suppose telling them to fuck off on their wall made them get the message.

I accept pretty much anybody. I get really excited when I see somebody has added me.

I had some Filipino girl once trying to persuade me to get a flight over to meet her. I haven't even gone to the trouble of deleting her.
And last week I accepted somebody posing as a 22 year old Californian. "how are you doing Daniel. i am Helen by name, i picked you randomly, when i go thru your profile and i found it lovely and interesting." she said. If we were sat next to each other on a train and she started talking to me, I wouldn't just ignore her so I didn't on this occasion either.

When I was 15 and still at school I got added by a 'Scottish girl' and we flirted for over a month until I found out it was my best mate pissing about. So I've learnt just how much to not give away to people I don't know.

All the friends on my list are people I do actually know quite well - either old school friends or ex-colleagues, or even a few poeple I have met through other friends.

From memory you have around 500 friends. No one knows that many people, it's impossible.

Thats what facebook is (sadly) all about. Adding people just so you can 'stalk' their pictures.

I would say i converse with about 8-9 of my facebook friends regularly and i've got about 200 "friends" on the site. Which actually isn't very many. Some people have 3 thousand, i dread to think how tenuous their friendships are.

What is the point of Facebook friends?

Why do some people think they have achieved something because they have 1000 "friends"?

I only have two friends in the whole world.
