The Wanderers grand tour continued down to Essex on Tuesday night.
The relief was palpable as our coach left Watford Gap service station on the way to the rearranged match at Southend.
Pre-match refreshments were available in the Blue Boar, reserved exclusively for away fans. The Wavering Gold was most acceptable.
Hopes were high to get something from the match, especially as the news filtered through that Gary Madine was leading the team up front.
Once inside Roots Hall the snack bar was labelled a restaurant complete with chairs and tables.
We controlled the first half but missed a load of chances.
Not surprisingly Southend came at us in the second half but we rode the storm. Then we began to get on top again and when Mark Beevers fired home in added time, we got the result we deserved.
This result was immense. 10 points ahead with five matches to go. Promotion is ours to lose but we still have work to do.
Twelve months ago we were facing extinction and certain relegation. I cannot believe the position we are in today.
Full marks go to Phil Parkinson and his team and to Ken Anderson for helping us survive and get into a position where the recovery has started.
It’s not certain yet but the Super Whites are going up.
