Wanderers’ chances of committing Jay Spearing to a new deal at the Macron Stadium have reached the make or break stage.

The midfielder is out of contract and The Bolton News understands he has been offered a new contract at the Macron Stadium.

But the former Liverpool star, whose previous deal signed in 2013 made him one of the highest earners in the squad, has thus far refused reduced terms as the club continues to try and cut down its wage bill.

Talks continued yesterday between the club, Spearing and his representatives in an effort to find common ground.

Spearing has made 173 appearances for Wanderers, scoring 10 goals, and was a key man in last year’s promotion from League One.

We have learned at least one other club has offered him a contract for next season and that the 28-year-old is keen to remain close to his family’s base on Merseyside.

Phil Parkinson has looked round for options in the transfer market and is known to have contacted West Ham about the availability of playmaker Josh Cullen alongside his team-mate Reece Burke. Experienced Australia international Mark Milligan is another option for the Whites boss.

Spearing was not part of the group who returned to Lostock at the start of the week for pre-season testing but, speaking to The Bolton News, the Whites boss was delighted by the condition his players have kept themselves in over the summer.

“They did a physical session yesterday and as a group they are a long, long way ahead of where they were at this point last year,” he told us.

“Their weight and their fat levels are really good for this time of year and I always think that’s a statement of intent for any team in pre-season.

“Condition-wise I am very pleased with what shape the lads have come back to us in, it bodes well for the season ahead.”

Meanwhile, Northern Ireland striker Niall McGinn remains an option for Wanderers as they look to strengthen their attack.

Reports yesterday linked the former Aberdeen favourite with a move to South Korea but it is understood the Whites are keeping tabs on his situation.
