Wanderers are investigating whether work permit issues could get in the way of their pursuit of Australia international Mark Milligan.
The 31-year-old midfielder has 59 caps for his country and is a free agent after a spell playing in the United Arab Emirates.
Birmingham City and Burton Albion have also had talks with Milligan’s representatives but the Whites are thought to be favourites – even though the deal will not be straightforward.
Before committing completely, Wanderers are looking at how much international red tape they will have to wade through in order for him to sign at the Macron Stadium.
Milligan is best known as a ball-winning midfielder but played recently at the Confederations Cup as a centre-half on the right-hand side of a back three.
He has had spells in China and Japan and is also wanted back home by Melbourne Victory next season – but wants to try his luck in England.
Meanwhile, reports in the North East claim Wanderers are ‘unlikely’ to match the loan fee Newcastle United are demanding for striker Adam Armstrong.
The 20-year-old, who helped England lift the World Cup in South Korea this summer, has been hawked about clubs in the Championship and League one this summer.
Newcastle are looking for someone to take a large percentage of Armstrong’s £18,000-a-week wages off their hands to do a deal.
Wanderers are open to a deal but are known to have other live options at present.
