Wanderers hope the lure of regular football before this summer’s World Cup finals will convince Chung Yong Lee to make a sensational return to the Macron.

Negotiations are underway to bring the South Korea international in on loan before Wednesday’s deadline.

Chung-Yong has started just one Premier League game this season and has been told he can find another club this month if he chooses.

Wanderers tried to sign the 29-year-old back in August but were told Chung-Yong wanted to stay and fight for his place at Selhurst Park. His failure to find a regular game under Roy Hodgson has now put his place in the Korea squad in some question, however, which could work in the Whites’ favour in the lead-up to this summer’s tournament in Russia.

Sources at Wanderers are optimistic a deal can be struck with Premier League Palace over the player’s wages, with the relationship between the two clubs said to be excellent.

Chung-Yong would also be a hugely popular signing among the Bolton fans, who will recall his famous headed winner against Birmingham City in the 2010 FA Cup quarter-final at St Andrews.

Signed for £2.2million from FC Seoul in 2009, Chung-Yong played nearly 200 games for the Whites, scoring 20 goals and providing 36 assists.

His £1m move to Palace in 2015 has not worked out as planned, however, with only 46 appearances in three years at Selhurst Park, and just one solitary goal.

He has featured just three times for the Eagles in the Premier League this term and is out of contract in the summer - so could view a loan move in familiar surroundings as the ideal chance to revive his career.

Chung-Yong’s versatility across the front line could be just the spark Phil Parkinson has been searching for in the transfer window.

The Whites boss wants another striker on board and may have to find alternatives to Reece Burke and Josh Cullen, with their return from West Ham looking far from certain.

Both youngsters featured in the Hammers’ FA Cup fourth round defeat to Wigan Athletic on Saturday, after which David Moyes admitted his injury-hit squad was looking too thin to consider moving players out.

That'll be Marc Iles. He's renowned for it. If there's no news, why can't he just make something up like every other sports writer?
