No we shouldn't retire any numbers. I dont ever see a need to do that, think of all the players before them who have worn that number, why should it end?

I think the really sad is bit is that the club doesn't seem to give a rat's ass about past players - unless giving them a job somewhere or allowing them to train with them counts.
Why should they give a rat's ass? They paid these players HUGE amounts of money and in many cases got very little in turn.
Keegan, if someone leaves the company you work for do you retire their chair or their coffee mug?
I'd retire the coffee mug. Seriously though, I don't expect the club to be eternally grateful to a player for agreeing to play football for very attractive salaries, but for those who display loyalty and effort above and beyond the confines of a contractual agreement for extended periods, some display by the club would be a nice gesture. That's all I'm saying.

Short answer no.
He was not a legend or even a great player. Something bad happened to him and he has fortunately made a good recovery. As some of us said at the time there is a tendency to get morbidly sentimental about misfortune these days - it seemed to start with the public hysteria over Princess Di's death. It's no reason to retire a shirt number.
Probably the only player I could see justifying retiring a shirt number for is Nat Lofthouse and it's a bit late for that now.

But we don't honour "legends" either.
Ok, so we named a stand after Nat, nice touch, the statue was publicly funded.

Legends are made out of their actions and word of mouth and not from retiring shirts or any other accolade.
Nat Lofthouse was before my time, as a player, but everyone knows him through his actions and word of mouth same goes for Big Sam, as a player and manager, Frank Worthington, John McGinley, then there is Joe Smith from the early part of the 20th Century and there are many others all well remembered and are legends within the club. We don't need any accolade - just being remembered is all we need.

I'm of the opinion club legends deserve more than "oh yeah i remember him"

McGinlay can't be that big a legend, how many plonkers out there still can't even spell his name after all these years?

I have always mispelt his name - nothing new and will continue to happen call it an achilles heel if you want!

I can't remember a central midfielder wearing 6 in the early to mid 90s, before squad numbers came in.
It used to be something like:
1 - GK, 2 - RB, 3 - LB, 4 - CM (although David Lee did wear 4), 5 - CB, 6 -CB, 7 - RM, 8 - CM, 9 - ST, 10 - ST, 11 - LM. I always assoicate 6 with Mark Winstanley from that era.
