The mood was upbeat after our unexpected, but brilliant, win at the Hawthorns.
Another big end-of-season clear-out, 10 new signings, new heroes to be established, new villains to be created and more business shenanigans gave us plenty to discuss. It’s a wonder we had time to go to the match.
It is better to look at the signings during the whole transfer window than on the media-hyped transfer deadline day.
Good football judgement and financial prudence is what we need in our position and we need to trust Phil Parkinson and Ken Anderson to do their jobs in that respect.
Let’s hope all the signings come good and the early signs are favourable.
Parkinson brought in Craig Noone for the injured Sammy Ameobi, in an otherwise unchanged team on Saturday and the least said about the first half, the better as Bristol City dominated and could easily have been out of sight by half time.
But we survived somehow and pushed up a bit at the start of the second half and were rewarded with a rare goal from Will Buckley and another from the in-form 'super' Josh Magennis.
This hardly stopped Bristol City, though, and they continued to press forward and deservedly came back to grab a point – and very nearly a win at the end.
A lot of the refereeing decisions were debatable, especially the missed foul on Mark Beevers before their equaliser.
In fairness, though, Bristol City were denied a clear penalty.
It’s frustrating to lose a two-goal lead but we were up against a better team, who played very well, so I’m happy with the point.
I’m more than happy with four points from the first two matches as that takes the pressure off a little as Parkinson blends his team together.
We need to see where we are after a dozen matches as teams settle down in the Championship and the loan window has closed.
It’s looking like the Championship will be a fiercely-contested league this year with a lot of good teams challenging for the promotion places.
Comfortable mid-table mediocrity for us would be a welcome achievement this season and some confirmation we are moving in the right direction.
We’ve had an encouraging start – let’s keep it going.
