Wanderers are set to send Connor Hall out on loan for the rest of the season.
The young striker has spent the last few months at Accrington Stanley in League One but is due back at Bolton before their FA Cup third-round tie against Walsall.
Problems with the registration of Christian Doidge, Gary O’Neil and Remi Matthews could mean Phil Parkinson has to draft Hall into his first-team squad tomorrow afternoon.
It is understood, however, that the longer-term plan is to send him back out on loan for more experience and the former Sheffield United front man has two League Two sides looking to take him for the rest of the campaign.
Hall made the first league start of his career in Accrington’s 2-1 victory against Shrewsbury Town on Boxing Day, made another 12 appearances from the bench, and played four times in the Checkatrade Trophy.
Wanderers are keen to see him play more football – and could now allow him to drop down a division to gain more experience.
Hall made his first start for Bolton against Leeds United in the Carabao Cup in August and signed a two-year deal with the club last summer following a prolific season in the Under-23s in which he scored 23 goals.
Parkinson will be looking to make changes for tomorrow’s cup tie against the Saddlers, eager to try and put the 6-0 defeat at Hull City firmly in the past.
Development squad midfielder Joe Pritchard is among those who could be drafted into the senior set-up to gain some experience, with Everton loanee Joe Williams currently side-lined because of a thigh strain.
The Bolton boss has come in for heavy criticism for the capitulation at the KCOM but feels he can get the reaction he is looking for on Saturday, thereby avoiding a proverbial banana skin.
“It’s the nature of the job,” he said. “We have got to look at the overall picture going into January, we have got the FA Cup game at the weekend, and we need to pick a team with some freshness in it.
“That said, when you are getting beat three or four-nil, the legs become that bit heavier. It becomes harder to play.”
Wanderers have exited the FA Cup at the third-round stage in each of the last two seasons Parkinson has been in charge against Premier League opponents – Huddersfield Town and Crystal Palace.
