Ian Evatt has called for a “team effort” to keep Wanderers on the path to success this season.
Earlier this week the Bolton boss voiced his displeasure at ‘negative’ comments which had been made on the club’s iFollow commentary by former player, Gary Henshaw.
Speaking after the win against Oldham Athletic on Tuesday, Evatt said his response had been prompted by concern that negative vibes could derail the progress his side had been making.
Confidence in the Wanderers camp is at a season high after six straight wins and, says Evatt, exemplified by the return to form of club captain Antoni Sarcevic, who had missed much of February’s revival through injury.
“Sarce is a good player and because he has got better players around him now and that makes the difference,” Evatt explained, “It’s confidence, it’s results and that belief comes flooding back to them.
“It’s funny because they players are actually quite low and disappointed in the dressing room that we didn’t go and win three, four, five and didn’t make the game more comfortable for ourselves, which is great.
“They’re becoming hungry, they want to win more than anything. The culture and environment is fantastic at the moment and, yes, I had a bit of a moan and a dig yesterday, but I care and I care about the culture and the environment we’re in and the positivity that this club needs around it. That is why I did it.
“From supporters, from the town, from the staff, from the media, we all need to pull in the same direction if we want to achieve what we want to achieve and that’s what was frustrating.
“But hopefully we’re done with that now, I’ve said what I had to say and we’ll move on to Saturday and hopefully get the right result against Bradford.”
That Wanderers did not build on a two-goal lead against 10 men Oldham was a slight disappointment on the night, although Evatt took some solace from the fact his players were able to save themselves for the game at Valley Parade this weekend.
“Yeah that’s another stage of our improvement,” he said. “We have to be relentless. We have to be ruthless and I think we probably could have scored some more with better decision making and some selfish decisions in the final third.
“But the game was over at half-time and we’d done the hard yards in the first half, but we’ve conserved some energy for Saturday at Bradford, which is going to be a really tough and difficult game.”
