Another tough game tonight against a side who are currently third in the table. I can see it being a tight affair again with not many goals in it. Head says draw but hearts says 1-0 to the Super Whites.

It should be a good game and we need to be careful especially  if Wes Hoolahan plays - always rated him and Mullin is scoring for fun. Could go either way but I really think we need the win more than they do.

I think we could be in trouble if we son't score fairly early on, or at least the first half.

Preview: Bolton Wanderers vs. Cambridge United

On the 75th anniversary of the Burnden Park Disaster, Bolton Wanderers Football Club host Cambridge United in Sky Bet League Two action at the University of Bolton Stadium.

Pre-Match Quotes:

Ian Evatt: “It’s absolutely heartbreaking to think that people went to watch a football match and didn’t go home again. That is really, really heartbreaking and sad.

"For the 75th anniversary, we want to go out there and perform to the level to give them the respect and the memory that they deserve and that’s as far as it goes.

"We understand the importance of it, we understand the importance of the occasion, and we want to go out there and win.

“The players are all aware of it, of course. They will be wearing black armbands, there will be a minute’s silence and the players want to go out there and perform to the best levels they can for a number of reasons and that is the main reason.

“We can’t forget and we never will forget. Those 33 names will live long in the memory of this football club as part of our existence and rightly so.”

On Tonight’s Opponents: “They’re dangerous, they’ve got some threats. Paul Mullin is having the season of his life, he scored an exceptional goal on Saturday.

"A player that I played with, Wes Hoolahan, is a fantastically talented footballer. They’ve got some good players. We have to respect that, but also it’s about doing what we want.

"I heard Pep (Guardiola) say it yesterday and I see it the same way, is if we can limit the opposition having the ball by ourselves having the ball, that is the best way to defend.

"If we can have the ball and control possession and control the tempo and speed of the game, it will limit their opportunities, and that’s what we need to do, avoid giving away sloppy passes, avoid too many transitions, just keep probing, keep patient, be really reliable in possession and therefore limiting the opposition chances to hurt us.”

Mark Bonnar: “They’re well-resourced, they’ve got good facilities, and they shouldn’t be at the level.

“There’s pressure on them to get out of this level obviously, and they expect that of themselves.

“It’s no shock to see the run they’ve been going on and where they find themselves in the form table. It makes it a really tough game for us.

"For us it’s one to be excited by, to go and see how we can compete with them.

“The fact that we’re playing against them in a game that is at the top of this table, I think that’s a really exciting position to be in.

“We’ve got to try the best we can, work as hard as we can, give everything we’ve got, and we’ll see where we end up at the end of it. Then we’ll deal with the next game as it comes in front of us after that.”

How to Watch:

Team News:

Ian Evatt has no fresh injury concerns ahead of Tuesday night’s game as Bolton Wanderers look to get back on the winning track after Saturday’s draw at Bradford City.

Mark Bonner has revealed that United picked up a few knocks over the weekend and are a bit light heading into the game at the University of Bolton Stadium.

Bookies Odds:

Bradford City win: 21/20

Draw: 23/10

Cambridge United win: 5/2

Correct as of 9/3/2021 (12pm) on skybet.com

Form:

Saturday’s draw against Bradford City brought an end to Wanderers six-game winning streak. However, Wanderers arguably put on their best display of the season at Valley Parade and were unlucky not to make it another victory.

Cambridge have won three out of their last six games, beating Walsall at the weekend to strengthen their position in the automatic promotions places.

Last time out:

Antoni Sarcevic’s goal eight minutes from time earned Bolton Wanderers a point at the Abbey Stadium after they came from behind to cancel out an own goal by ‘keeper Billy Crellin.

Cambridge were riding high in the table but were kept at bay for the majority of the game with Wanderers unfortunate not to win.

Match Officials:

Referee: Peter Wright.

Assistant Referees: Ravel Cheosiaua and Robert Atkin.

Find the game as if you are placing a bet and nearer the time it will let you click on a link to watch. I did this on Saturday watching St Pauli, the video on my laptop was quite small though!

I’m sticking with I follow so that I can contribute albeit in a small way to the club. So far this season I reckon I’ve bought Maddison a khaki left boot but he’s yet to wear it.

Best we've played all season for the first hour, should have been 3 or 4 up.

Sarcevic had his best game, but when the subs came on we lost our way a bit.

Still, 3 points is all that matters.

Report: Bolton Wanderers 2-1 Cambridge United

First half goals from Eoin Doyle and Antoni Sarcevic were enough to give Ian Evatt’s men their eighth victory in a ten-game unbeaten spell as they overwhelmed second-placed Cambridge United at the University of Bolton Stadium.

The Irishman grabbed his 14th goal of an impressive campaign while the Wanderers skipper’s strike put the finishing touches to arguably his best performance for the club after the hosts dominated their opponents throughout the vast majority of the game.

Although an uncharacteristic mistake from goalkeeper Matt Gilks allowed Cambridge to pull a goal back through Kyle Knoyle's strike, Wanderers were in no real danger of going away with anything other than the three points that they claimed.

Wanderers ended the day in seventh spot of the Sky Bet League Two table and just four points away from the automatic promotion places.

The Wanderers manager made one change from the side that drew with Bradford City at the weekend with the goalscorer from that match, Nathan Delfouneso, coming in for Lloyd Isgrove who was named among the substitutes.

Prior to the game, a minute’s silence was held to remember the 33 Wanderers fans who lost their lives during the Burnden Park Disaster 75 years ago while both captains laid a wreath on the far touchline.

After a bright start by the visitors, Wanderers soon found their rhythm and a good passing move earned them a corner which eventually came to nothing.

The first opportunity belonged to Cambridge, with Gilks making a strong save at the expense of a corner from Shilow Tracey after the frontman was played in when Delfouneso had lost possession in Wanderers territory.

It was Callum Burton’s turn to make an important save after 15 minutes when he kept out Doyle’s first-time volley off John’s wonderful centre after the full-back was found by a smart flick from Dapo Afolayan.

Kieran Lee fired over from inside the box after John’s pass to Sarcevic made its way to the midfielder and then John’s 25-yard free-kick after Doyle was scythed down was well struck and had Burton momentarily worried before the ball went just over the bar.

The Welshman put in an impressive performance, and he ran into the box and smashed a shot towards goal after being played in by a superb pass by Lee but Burton blocked the effort which went out for a corner.

The Cambridge ‘keeper dived to his right to keep out an Afolayan strike when Doyle’s touch found the midfielder after Sarcevic had set up the move.

Wanderers were on top and Doyle’s 14th goal of the season broke the deadlock after 38 minutes when he provided the perfect touch to a perfect passage of play. Sarcevic’s inch-perfect pass found Gethin Jones charging into space and the full-back’s cutback was expertly finished by Wanderers’ leading marksman.

One became two and the Wanderers ‘skipper Sarcevic blasted in a volley from the edge of the box after Afolayan’s effort had eventually rebounded into this path following a brief scramble as a consequence of Burton's save.

On the stroke of half-time, Doyle was very unfortunate not to grab a second when he lifted the ball over the advancing Burton before watching it drift agonisingly wide.

Declan Drysdale's last-ditch defending prevented a certain third for Wanderers as MJ Williams’ cross after some great interchanges in the box resulted in a corner.

Fully in control of the game, Wanderers started the second half as they finished the first, and Sarcevic's tried his luck with a drive from distance which took a deflection before being held by Burton at the second time of asking.

Delfouenso was brought down in full flow, just wide of centre and 20 yards out, by Drysdale. Sarcevic’s resulting set-piece was well struck but the visitors' wall proved to be resolute.

The Wanderers captain, who had put in an outstanding display, was withdrawn just after the hour mark with Marcus Maddison coming on for him.

Lee almost grabbed a third when his curling effort from the edge of the box was tipped away for a corner by Burton.

Wanderers were camped in the Cambridge half and were deserving of more goals, and Burton came racing off his line to block Afolayan’s effort after the on-loan man raced on to Doyle’s intelligent pass.

Evatt made his second change of the evening with 15 minutes left on the clock when George Thomason came on for the hard-working Delfouneso.

A rare foray into the Wanderers half by the visitors resulted in Luke Hannant skying a ball into the Carrs Pasties North Stand after finding a pocket of space to move into.

The visitors were handed a lifeline with just over ten minutes remaining when Gilks inadvertently allowed Knoyle’s drive from distance to slip under his body.

Evatt made his final changes of the evening immediately afterwards when Shaun Miller and Arthur Gnahoua came on for Doyle and Afolayan with eight minutes remaining.

Wanderers saw the game out professionally and resolutely to claim another impressive victory. In the dying moments, MJ Williams and Alex Baptiste combined bravely to deny Paul Mullin from close range.

It was our best performance of the season and for 80 minutes we were fully on top. Gilks then made his error and gave them a sniff but we held out well.

As already mentioned taking off Sarc was a mistake but he's just back from injury so is he ready for a full 90 minutes? If he had to come off then i would have brought on Thomason instead.

I thought Afolayan was outstanding and Lee and Williams in front of the back 4 were great as well.

It was very pleasing to see the front players click as a unit for a good period of the game and if they can keep that up we’ll score plenty. Decent quality last night.
Other results helped us out too - now only Exeter and Carlisle can knock us out of the playoffs if they win their games in hand and the top teams lost or drew.
Good news all round apart from Maddison who Evatt obviously rates but has been a liability so far.

Maddison was lazy and clueless last night. Didn't enter any tackles, was usually out of position, and played like some superstar, only there to take spectacular shots at the opposition goal, (it never happened).
He was a liability last night, as he wandered around the pitch, really not knowing what he was doing, and as a result we lost control of his position, allowing them to advance easily down their left wing.
He's worse than bad, he actually thinks he's good.

Maddison must have ability, however his body language is so out of sinc with the rest of the team, he needs minutes on the pitch, but we do not have that luxury we need all 11 up to speed at this point of the season, we carried Crellin we can't afford to carry Maddison shame really. Isgrove,King Arthur, Miller all offer more.

The difference between him and sarcevic was self-evident last night with sarcevic winning back possession and then driving us on whilst Maddison lost possession, fell over whenever a defender got near him and made little effort to get it back. When the substitution was made it was only a matter of minutes before I got worried we’d blow a winning position. Nearly did too.
