On Tuesday, France's justice ministry said the bodies of 26 of at least 27 victims had been identified and repatriation requests were under way.
The ministry said it could confirm the identity of 16 Kurdish people from Iraq, including four women aged 22 to 46, a 16-year-old teenager, a seven-year-old child and ten men aged 19 to 37, as well as that of a 23-year-old Kurdish man from Iran.
Three Ethiopians were also identified, including two women aged 22 and 25 and a man aged 46.
A Somali woman aged 33, four Afghan men aged between 24 and 40 and an Egyptian man aged 20 were also identified.

The highest proportion of migrants who cross the Channel are Iranians fleeing the Ayatollahs (29%)

You could cling on and argue that the Egyptian is likely to be an economic migrant and that the remaining unaccounted person could be Algerian but I think you'd be clutching at straws.
RIP to the dead though for whatever reasons they tried to get here for.
Certainly not worth losing your life for when they were already is a country where they were free and safe already.

Even the Egyptian could have valid grounds for asylum after their government extended a "state of emergency" that allowed them to discriminate against political opponents. They are currently purging the opposition.

Yes I didn't say otherwise - in fact I deliberately worded what I did to allow for such a possibility.
Nice try and one day you will catch me out on something I post as I don't claim to be perfect or know everything.
But sorry, not this time!

I was actually thinking of both you and Wanderlust when I wrote that.
Honestly.

Well I like to stick by the facts and the legalities, you and Wanderlust seem to me to prefer to go down the prejudged they are guilty path or wriggle as much as you can so not to be seen to be wrong route.
Do we meet in the middle somehow perhaps?
I don't think so.
I judge on legality not morals, you seem to believe morals are more important than the legality.
Rightly or wrongly the way the system works is based on legality and not moral judgement.
Moral judgements may well lead to law - thou shalt not steal for instance - but not all moral views do, or at least as you want them to do - take for instance the abortion issue currently embroiled in the US legal system.
Both sides have a moral argument but the law defines where it should lie - that is until the law changes (as what is seemingly happening).
As for Wanderlust he seems to go his own way as he clearly makes things up to suit his opinions (the government is in control of what the press reports - how laughable is that statement now!) and he tells us he's not posted on ww that he voted for Brexit when several of us KNOW he in fact DID!
So he both fails the 'fact' and 'morals' tests just to avoid admitting he'd got something wrong on the internet!!!
I have respect for your stance, you do mean well for all in general.
I have non for Wanderlust, it's just himself and his view that matters to him.

Unless the law falls on the side you disagree with, in which case it's akin to a VAR decision and doesn't count right?

All the VAR decisions were adhered to, even if no one thought they were right at the time - just like the law.
Because those decisions were felt to be wrong by the consensus of those who made the rules, they were changed - just like the law does.
My analogy, which clearly you choose to scoff at, still stands.
VAR didn't change because I personally thought the rules to what it worked to at the time was wrong, they changed because those in charge reacted to the widespread disapproval of them by both those involved such as the managers, players as well as the journalists, pundits and the general public too.
It's exactly the same with the law, the law makers proposals (the elected executive) are put to a vote in Parliament to change, repeal or enact new laws for the judiciary to enforce.
The executive achieves this position by the public endorsement of their polices in their manifestos at the time of the elections.
Laws change because they are seen no longer to work, VAR changed because it was seen not to be working as people wanted it to.
It didn't change simply because I thought it to be wrong.

Announced yesterday that there were 3 times more refugee channel crossings in 2021 than in the previous year and 13 times more than in 2019.
Of the 28K plus migrants that made the journey in 2021 a grand total of 5 have been returned to France - perhaps because the UK has abandoned it's return arrangements with the EU.

Disgraceful that the government are spending £5m a day on housing these migrants when they feel they need to screw pensioners by suspending the triple lock. Macron is absolutely right when he says that if we are to cut the flow, we need to cease this ridiculous situation of housing, feeding and even paying them, when our own poor and pensioners have to choose between heating and eating. These people who have contributed nothing, have no worries on any of these things yet the government does nothing to change it. The French don’t give them anything, they’re just living in tents or in shelters so it’s no wonder they make so much effort to get here. If we seriously want to stop them coming, withdraw any support to those coming in illegally across the channel, bollocks to the human rights crap. Governments are supposed to look after their own citizens not everyone else’s.

DO you lead a comfortable suburban life in the UK, but fear and hate the outside world for no good reason? Here’s how to enjoy pretending to be oppressed.
Live in fear of immigrants
Make this non-existent threat a constant feature of your life. Maybe even build defences to keep them out. Put some barbed wire on your shed and futilely try to train your cocker spaniel to ‘Kill!’. It’s pointless but you can moan to your neighbours that you’ve been forced to do it.
Take your newspaper at face value
If the Express, Mail or Times are full of articles about bolshy students complaining about statues and racism, clearly free speech is a thing of the past. Don’t ask yourself if culture war nonsense just sells papers and gets clicks – your entire reality may come crashing down like The Truman Show.
Do something mental on Victory in Europe Day
Show your love for Britain (ie. England) by doing something weird like building a three-quarter size WW2 Cromwell tank in your drive by fixing a cardboard turret, gun and ‘tracks’ to your Ford Focus. This is very normal and not quite disrespectful in its own way.
Worry about house prices falling
This is unlikely to shaft you financially, but drone on about it anyway. At the same time be furious about your kids not being able to get on the property ladder, but always vote to keep things exactly the same.
Have zero empathy with anyone who is not like you
Don’t ask why asylum seekers might be undertaking their perilous journey. Likewise do not ask yourself if life on benefits might be a bit grim. By contrast, be incandescent with rage over tiny inconveniences to yourself like the council changing the wheelie bin collection days.
Be worryingly paranoid
Believe you are constantly being persecuted by everyone from the EU to your local supermarket. Your sense of victimhood is so entrenched by now you won’t worry that you’re starting to go bonkers.

Can I have a stab at this?karlypants wrote:Do you think it's value for money Boncey?
No - entirely due to the ridiculous government policy. When we have an influx of migrants who are fleeing oppressive states, the dumbest thing to do is to lock them up for an eternity.
Once initial security checks have been undertaken they should be released under terms similar to parole for say a year and allowed to work with retraining and language support if necessary.
Our NHS is screaming out for doctors and nurses yet we have thousands of them bunked up in hotels, especially amongst the middle class that has fled the Iran regime.
Those less skilled can take up the slack in agriculture, social care and the leisure industry - all of which are desperate for staff.
Check them - parole them - train them - employ them - tax them
It's a simple formula based on "working your assets".

That basically will open the floodgates!
Everybody and their dog will attempt to come here then - we basically are doing a Merkle and she let 5 million in!
We've got to ask the question WHY are they wanting to come to the UK?
There can only be two reasons - one for safety (asylum), one for economic reasons (migrants).
If it is for asylum then the question must be asked why are they already passing through many safe countries (France, Italy, Greece, etc) just to come here?
If they are migrants then they need to go down the proper channels and they aren't doing that because they know they haven't the skills, education, etc, to meet entry requirements.
Moving away from fake news that there are thousands of Iranian doctors and nurses "bunked up in hotels" there were actually just 4,500 illegal migrants from Iran who arrived in 2020 and I very much doubt that everyone of them were a doctor or a nurse.
