Are you having difficulty understanding things?

I never said Russia couldn't blow up dams...

Sluffy wrote: Russia has already blown a few dams but the effectiveness is only temporary until the water level settles.

...they've already done that to attempt to stop the Ukraine army crossing the Inhulets River in Kherson, it worked for a few days until the waters found its own level and Ukraine have since advanced across it.

Similarly, I never said Russia could not use nuclear weapons...

Sluffy wrote: If he goes down the nuclear or chemical rout America will retaliate - it is said they will simply sink the Russian Black Sea fleet.

...but the US has informed Russia that it will be met by "catastrophic consequences" if it does.

I suggest you try reading the words that are actually there rather than the ones you seem to make up in your head and react to.

Zelensky is worried about this dam as reported here and elsewhere but the US military strategist I quoted felt that far worse carnage could be caused by hitting two other dams of the Dniepro.

However an expert told me "the experts" say this isn't an option.

What exactly is your problem?

I've never said they wouldn't attack dams, I said that Russia has indeed done that before and caused problems BUT it is only a short-term issue, as once the water has found its own level, then the war simply carries on.

You know I've already said that - this now being the THIRD TIME - so I can only assume you are once again deliberately trolling and thus you've ignored all my previous warnings.

As for troop gatherings in Belarus, the view is that the aim is to 'pin' Ukraine forces to the Belarusian boarder as opposed to their forces being able to be deployed on the active fronts and that there isn't going to be an attack from the Belarus direction any time soon if at all.

With winter and sub zero temperatures rapidly approaching the Russians have redoubled their efforts to deprive Ukraine of power and water - whilst digging in in the areas they currently hold.
There is nothing to stop the Russians from continuing to attack from a distance throughout the forthcoming winter so Ukraine needs to find a way to survive the next 4 or 5 months.
The record low temperature in February is -32 centigrade.

Quite right Lusty, the Russians realise they haven’t now got the conventional weapons to threaten Ukraine so their only option is to hit the infrastructure to weaken the resolve of the population. Sickening really and I truly pity the poor Ukrainians who will suffer. I just can’t see hope of a resolution any time soon sadly bit can only hope that Putin gets his just desserts eventually.

If that's true it could well make him more "I don't give a f*** reckless" which is a worry.

Meanwhile this interested me:

"Moscow’s use of non-Russians and Cossacks in Ukraine has received far more attention than the appearance of non-Russian units there that are taking part in the fight against Russian aggression. But there are a number of them: the latest to appear is the Imam Shamil battalion consisting of Daghestanis.
Named for the Islamic divine who led the North Caucasian resistance to the advance of tsarist forces in that region in the 19th century, the new unit is of as yet unknown size but is committed to defeating Russians first in Ukraine and then in Daghestan and across the North Caucasus.
Its commander, Magomed Saypulayev, says that his group began to fight Russia “ten to fifteen years ago” but recently decided to join the battle in Ukraine against Russian imperialism there  (kavkazr.com/a/dagestanskiy-bataljon-imeni-imama-shamilya-vystupit-v-voyne-na-storone-ukrainy-/32106693.html).
There are also three Chechen units fighting on the side of Ukraine – the Dudayev Battalion, the Mansur Battalion, and a Chechen unit within the Ukrainian army. Akhmed Zakayev, leader of the Ichkerian government in exile, says these represent the rebirth of the Ichkerian army (newcaucasus.com/nc-other/21761-ahmed-zakaev-v-ukraine-vozrozhdaetsya-armiya-ichkerii.html).
In addition to these units, there have been numerous non-Russians from elsewhere in the North Caucasus and the Russian Federation who have made their way to Ukraine to fight for Kyiv against Russia in the hopes that Moscow’s defeat there will open the way for their freedom and independence"

Interesting because although a lot of former Soviet states still have puppet governments, all have nationalist groups that want to end Russian influence.
A potential can of worms for Putin.

Sorry, I'm a bit late in replying but the answer to your question is - no.

I'm not sure where you got wind of the Satan 2 (which is properly known as the RS-28 Sarmat) but it is supposed to be one of these 'super' weapons that early in the war Putin threatened the west with, intending we would keep out of the war.

In theory it is easy to shoot down intercontinental ballistic missiles (IBM's) these days as they are fired up into the atmosphere and then arrive back into the atmosphere to land on their intended target.

With them leaving the atmosphere on launch the missiles can be detected early by radar and air defence has the time to intercept them before they reach their destinations.

The new concept of IBM's these days is not to leave the atmosphere and follow the Earth's curvature so as to give air defence radar as little time as possible to sight and destroy them.

China is the only country so far who claims they can do this but Russia certainly has shown the capability to do so and from all accounts (which may be true or not) all their test firings have suposedly failed up to now but Russia claims differently.

There's a little bit about it here if you are interested -

Probably just posting this to myself but I've been avidly watching over the last few days a documentary series by Adam Curtis (he specialises in films focusing on politics and power) on Russia, the collapse of communism (and democracy) and the rise of the Oligarchs/Putin.

The documentary is in seven, one hour segments - so I don't really expect anyone to view them - but if by any chance you did, you would start to understand why the way Russia and the Russian people's view of life and the world is completely foreign to our way of thinking - we simply can't deal with them on the same level, values and understand as ourselves - they simple don't have the same reference points as we do.

Anyway the documentary can be found here on BBC iplayer -

https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episodes/p0d3hwl1/russia-19851999-traumazone

Fwiw this is the Guardian's five star review of the documentary, - it sets the scene for anyone wanting to give the documentary a go.

One year ago today Russia attacked Ukraine.

Below is a rousing speech from the Chair of NATO'S Military Committee (ps - it is in English)

I quite like Beau (Justin King) and have yet to see anything he's said that I would take issue with but he's still just a random bloke off social media - and I keep saying never trust anyone's word without checking things out for yourself first.

I'm not trying to torpedo him in any way but I post a link to an article giving some historical background on him that highlight that he once held views (maybe still has, maybe not, I don't know?) that haven't always been mainstream shall we say.

https://www.latimes.com/politics/story/2021-03-30/google-moonshot-redirect-far-right-online-extremism-anarchist

Fwiw I think Beau has been speaking a great deal of sense on the YouTube clips I have seen so far in respect of the war.

Always worth a listen, unlike a few youtubers I could mention. Pretty balanced on the whole, and generally knows what he's talking about, again, unlike a few of them.
I don't pay much heed to most of them, due mainly to that little problem of 'confirmative bias'. That need we have to search out content that backs up our viewpoint, making it, in our eyes at least, the truth.
It's in all of us. I know it's there, so can control it. Some can't, and there's the rub.

Indeed Bonce.

Hatred and bias have ruined this site and those spouting it such as Wanderlust and Hip Priest were clearly engrossed in seeking out on social media, others who shared the same views as them - Confirmation Bias.

Multiple times I pointed this out (even linked to articles explaining what Confirmation Bias is and how damaging to them it was to their reasoning) but it was like trying to reason with stonewalls.

Sadly, with the advent of social media, people can believe any old bollocks they want and find instantly many holding the same views and supporting each other on them - despite it being absolutely untrue.

It gets to crazy levels - for instance Hip Priest chose to believe some random nutjob from Scunthorpe than the whole of the numerous public inquires and judicial findings in respect of the awarding of PPE contracts.

He probably still believes 'Phil' from Scunthorpe to this day!

Crazy, crazy, crazy attitude.

They want something to be so and will block out everything else that doesn't fit in with their belief.

We have half of America still believing Trump won the last election - despite absolutely zero evidence he did.

We have the vast majority in Russia believing Ukraine was going to invade them.

People are controlled and manipulated - always have been (what do people think religion basically is?) - but it happens instantaneously now with social media.

It's not going to go back to how the world was before social media so expect the craziness to get wilder and wilder as people now seem to believe everything they read on there to be true (if it is what they want to hear) and all a left-wing/right-wing plot against them if it isn't!!!

A friend of mine turns off if anyone from the other side of politics comes on to give his side of any argument. Just not having it. He's made his mind up, barricaded the doors, and is ready to let loose the cannons.
Rather sad really. When we stop listening, we stop learning, and that benefits no one.
