Ipswich have had several false dawns in recent years, but they have a relatively new manager who has been backed to the hilt in transfers and TBF their preseason performances and results against Premier League opposition should give them enormous confidence. Plus they have further signings incoming so no wonder the fans are buoyant.
Personally, I hate Ipswich and am using the train strike as an excuse to stay at home and watch it on iFollow - mainly because we never do well when I go to Portman Rd - and when I stayed away last season, we battered them.
I will be so happy if we get a result tomorrow Smile

Big ask this time though.

Too big a club to be where they are Lusty but then so are we and others. I’m actually quietly confident about tomorrow and think we might just squeeze a win but then I’ve never been good at forecasting!! 🥴

I’ll have to work out how to watch it on iFollow on a Saturday because I’m not going to get to as many matches this year but I’ll certainly catch the midweek ones. Anyway, it’ll be Nuts radio for me tomorrow if KP remembers it’s on. 🤪

Researching my piece for the online fanzine and was amazed at their record against us. They’ve had the upper hand for many many seasons. More so than we’ve had over them. And looking back at their fantastic team of the 80s, I know as a kid in the playground we would have “been Ipswich” at times and pretty sure I was “Muhren” on many an occasion (shame about where he ended up next!!).
I guess just like the Norwich’s and Plymouth’s of this world, they have next to no competition for fan bases - unlike ourselves being in such a congested footballing area. Gives them that edge with bigger crowds, bigger revenue, etc.

MATCH REPORT: Wanderers claim valuable point on opening day after Ipswich draw

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Wanderers survived a late onslaught to claim a precious point on the opening day following a 1-1 draw against Ipswich at Portman Road.

Aaron Morley put the Whites in front from the penalty spot but the hosts hit back through Lee Evans before half-time.

Ian Evatt handed Conor Bradley a start following his loan move from Liverpool, while Kyle Dempsey was absent from the squad after picking up a knock in training.

Wanderers started brightly and the first chance fell to Dapo Afolayan, who managed to get on the end of Morley’s corner but couldn’t keep his header down.

Wes Burns then managed to get in behind the Bolton defence but Morley was well placed to cut out his low cross.

Declan John had plenty of joy down the left flank during the early stages, joining the attack at every opportunity.

The Whites were then caught three-v-three on the break but Bradley did well to put a stop to the attack.

And the Northern Ireland international was involved in the first major talking point of the game, winning a penalty after he was brought down Leif Davis.

Morley made no mistake from the spot, beating Christian Walton low to his right with a clinical strike midway through the first half.

But Ipswich responded well to going a goal down and George Johnston had to make a vital block to deny Luke Woolfenden on the edge of the area.

The hosts managed to get back on level terms five minutes before the break when Evans fired home after Wanderers were caught out by Burns’ corner.

Bradley also made an important intervention to deny Freddie Ladapo from close range following a dangerous attack just before the break.

Early in the second half, Sam Morsy tried his luck from distance but it wasn’t troubling James Trafford in the Bolton goal.

The Whites were then nearly undone by an identical corner to the equaliser but this time Evans shot was blocked.

Trafford had to make a fine stop to keep out the midfielder’s looping header across goal from the resulting corner.

Wanderers then lost possession in a dangerous area but Ladapo’s shot was easy for the England Under-21 international to deal with.

Just after the hour mark, John delivered a superb cross that narrowly evaded a couple of Bolton shirts before substitute Greg Leigh turned behind at the far post.

Leigh then volleyed wide from the edge of the box after Ricardo Santos had initially done well to clear a corner.

Evatt opted to rotate his frontline heading into the final stages, with Amadou Bakayoko, Jon Dadi Bodvarsson and Elias Kahcunga all coming on in place of Afolayan, Charles and Kieran Lee.

Burns’ header then had Trafford scrambling low to his right after flicking off Santos but it bounced wide of the post.

Inside the final 10 minutes, Evans sent a free-kick over the bar before Sone Aluko sliced wide from distance.

Kayden Jackson then got in behind on the right and played a low cross towards Tyreece John-Jules, but the Arsenal loanee was unable to make contact.

And the hosts kept applying pressure in stoppage time, with Trafford making another smart stop to deny Morsy, who looked certain to score.

But Wanderers survived a barrage of pressure in the final minutes to ensure they would return to the North West with a point.

Trafford, Bradley, Jones, Santos, Johnston, John, Williams, Morley (Thomason), Lee (Bakayoko 71), Afolayan (Bodvarsson), Charles (Kachunga)

A good point, but Ipswich were much the better team, especially second half.

Did we even have a central midfield after the break, they seemed to just walk through us.

Hopefully it might wake Evans up to the fact we need a quality defensive midfielder.

Taking the point - they were a tad better than us overall. I thought Ian waited too long to bring the subs on which he normally does around the 60th minute. Nothing much to complain about other than my pet peeve of goalkeeper distribution and screwing around with it at the back.

Ipswich should have won and would have but for two quality last ditch blocks and a handful of squandered chances.
17 shots to 4 tells the story.
Trafford's distribution was the worst I've seen and I agree with TA that we put ourselves at risk trying to play out from the back but my main concern was that we gave the ball away too easily, especially in the second half and that just increased the pressure on our defence. We made a rod for our own backs and were lucky they didn't whup us with it.

Had to go out this afternoon so neither saw or listened to the game but it seems from all the comments I’ve seen so far that we were poor and very much second best and lucky to come away with a point. However, it does seem to confirm what many of the Ipswich fans seem to have been saying that they’re worried about where the goals are coming from this season so maybe they aren’t going to be the threat many consider them to be?

They have decent pacy strikers and they will get some success this season but both Johnston and especially Santos had excellent games and snuffed out the threat. Even so it took a couple of top notch blocks to keep out goalbound shots.
Our problems stemmed from sloppy passing in midfield and letting the likes of Sam Morsy run the show after we gifted them possession.

Top of the pile Wycombe are up next and we can't afford to gift them easy possession.

Seems our problems are still the same as last season Lusty and unless we resolve them we’re probably going to finish in the same position. We’ve got lots of midfielders yet still seem to get outplayed and outfought there as well as all the sloppy passing you mention and despite holding out yesterday the defence still looked unstable. Again we had few shots from open play and I’m leaning to the move of Dapo back to the left wing and partner Bod or Baka with Dion up top. I’d also like to see a regular position for Sadlier who I think has much more to offer than the likes of Kachunga. We’ve got lots of options but I’m not sure any of them are stand outs? As for Wycombe next week, they looked strong and I have to say I think we may be undone if we’re not at our best.

Trying to play in the style of a Guardiola team with these players was always going to be a big ask, but they could at least make it less painful by defending properly and passing better when they're pressed.
One thing they do well is press the opposition, but you have to be able to take it as well as dish it out.
