This story reminded me of the former chairman of one of our local NHS Trusts (now defunct).

He seemed to be passing himself off as a qualified lawyer and told the Law Society Gazette that he'd been 'Called to the Bar'. I couldn't prove conclusively that he hadn't until the Bar Council wrote to tell me that they'd never heard of him.
He got a lovely obituary in the Grauniad when he died not long after he'd been removed from office.
