Wanderers came from behind to clinch a 3-1 victory against Charlton Athletic at the UniBol.
The Addicks took an early lead through Scott Fraser but the Whites hit back through Conor Bradley’s equaliser nine minutes later.
Kieran Lee and George Johnston were also on target either side of half-time as Ian Evatt's men secured the three points.
Thomason repays Evatt’s faith
Ian Evatt made a big call to give George Thomason his first league start of the season ahead of the likes of Aaron Morley and Kyle Dempsey, and it certainly paid off.
The 21-year-old brought his A game against the Addicks, showing calmness on the ball and dictating play at times with his precise passing.
Thomason has come a long way during his time at Wanderers, proving he has the talent to make an impact in League One.
Evatt’s team selections aren’t about to get any easier ahead of next weekend’s trip to Cheltenham, particularly in the middle of the pitch.
Johnston shows character
Johnston will be disappointed with his defending for the opening goal, letting Jesurun Rak-Sakyi get the better of him.
But the young defender showed the perfect response, delivering a commanding performance and even popping up with a goal 14 minutes from time.
Johnston’s performances have been one of the main positives for the Whites since the start of the season and he seems to be relishing the levels of competition in the squad.
Ricardo Santos also impressed, showing similar levels of character to bounce back from a couple of errors over the past week or so.
Strikers blank again
While there were plenty of positives from the performance, one concern is that Wanderers’ forwards are still yet to score in League One this season.
The Whites have scored eight league goals so far – Bradley, Morley and Dempsey each have two, while Lee and Johnston both have one.
However, Dion Charles looked bright at times against the Addicks and has made a positive impact since his return from injury.
Moreover, Dapo Afolayan and Amadou Bakayoko’s tallies last season prove that they have the quality to shine at this level, while Jon Dadi Bodvarsson will hopefully be back involved in the near future.
Trafford plays his part
James Trafford made a couple of important stops to deny Rak-Sakyi during the second half and keep his side in front.
The Manchester City loanee has become a reliable figure between the sticks for Wanderers and re-signing him is arguably the biggest piece of business the club carried out during the summer.
It is easy to see why his ability and fearless attitude have made him a hugely popular figure among supporters.
