Wanderers could yet revive a deal to sign old boy Tom Eaves from Rotherham United.

Plans to bring the 30-year-old to the UniBol were all but abandoned earlier this month when he tore his hamstring playing a Championship game against Huddersfield Town.

But The Bolton News understand that Eaves has returned ahead of schedule and will be doing individual training sessions this week to prove his fitness ahead of a full comeback on Monday.

Wanderers are working on a deal to sign Burton Albion’s Victor Adeboyejo but also want another strong and experienced number nine to help them in their promotion push.

The Millers are ready to let Eaves – who has three years left on his contract – leave the club this month, six months after picking him up on a free transfer.

Wanderers fans will recall that Owen Coyle spent £1million on Eaves in 2010 just weeks after he had scored a hat-trick against them in a pre-season friendly.

He managed only a handful of appearances for Bolton, spending most of his five years at the club out on loan with Bristol Rovers, Shrewsbury Town, Rotherham, Yeovil and Bury.

Eaves has since built a solid career, primarily in League One, where he had a goal-laden spell with Gillingham and also helped Hull City to promotion in 2021.

With the transfer deadline fast approaching, the search for a striker has intensified after news that Dan Nlundulu will be out for at least a fortnight because of a hamstring injury, and that Elias Kachunga is expected to be given a three-match suspension for lashing out at Forest Green defender Brandon Cooper in Tuesday night’s 1-0 win.

Presuming the FA overturn uphold the club’s claim for mistaken identity and clear Dion Charles, the Northern Ireland international is the only out-and-out front man available for this weekend’s game at Charlton.

Kieran Sadlier or Shola Shoretire could be drafted in if the Whites fail to bring in a new player ahead of tomorrow lunchtime but negotiations with Burton Albion over a deal for Adeboyejo appear to be advancing quickly, with the player’s representatives in attendance at the Forest Green game.

Wanderers have also been linked with a move for Tottenham attacking midfielder Alfie Devine, who became the Premier League club's youngest-ever player at 16 years and 163 days when he turned out against Marine in an FA Cup game in January 2021.
