Shrewsbury boss Steve Cotterill says his side’s 1-0 defeat at Wanderers was “tough to take” – but admits it would have been worse without goalkeeper Marko Marosi.
Josh Sheehan got the decisive goal just after the hour mark, finding the top corner with a stunning strike from 25 yards.
Conor Bradley and Dion Charles were both denied by the woodwork during the second half, while Marosi made impressive stops to deny Kyle Dempsey, Victor Adeboyejo and Elias Kachunga.
Cotterill says his side didn’t have enough to “take on” Wanderers due to their current injury problems.
“We knew what it was going to be like, it was no different to what we have had for the last six weeks,” he explained.
“The lads gave everything again. We knew we would have to sit in, conserve energy and stay organised, maybe take our chance when it came.
“I thought we kept them at arm’s length but we ended up not blocking that shot on edge of the box.
“But when the lads have put in the shift they have this week, the bottom line was they didn’t have the energy to block the shot.
“Every time we have a big run of games you can play the same interview. They always give their all but we are short, that is the bottom line.
“We are more than down to the bare bones, we are down to the marrow and we have been for about six weeks. It is difficult at the moment, we are talking about defeats but we haven’t got enough to take these teams on."
The result sees Wanderers climb to fifth in the League One table and they still have a game in hand on the sides around them.
Meanwhile, Shrewsbury slip into the bottom half and are now winless in their last seven league matches.
Ian Evatt’s men are back at home on Tuesday night when they take on relegation-threatened Accrington.
