As the weather brightened up after a miserable rainy morning, we headed for the Unibol for the first of our home trilogy in the quest for a play-off place.
Barbecue chicken wings accompanied the Doombar deliberations in the Harvester. We have all taken up mathematics again to calculate what we need to do to achieve the coveted play-off place.
Similar calculations must be getting done in Peterborough and Derby. But the reality is we have to take one game at a time and today’s focus was getting three points off Shrewsbury Town.
Steve Cotterill’s gameplan for the Shrews was to defend, defend and when in doubt defend. 10 or 11 men behind the ball for most of the match. There was more room in the half time bar queues than there was in Shrewsbury’s penalty area.
It looked like being a frustrating afternoon but whatever was said at half time worked a treat as we stormed their defences. Woodwork hit three times, a goal disallowed, numerous other chances missed but Josh Sheehan broke the deadlock with a left foot beauty from the edge of the box. We all thought he was right footed!
Job done and we could have a glance at the other results to see that Peterborough United had lost but Derby County had won. The focus now moves on to beating Accrington Stanley on Tuesday night.
They are not going to make it easy for us but we have to battle match by match. Ian Evatt has got this squad together and everyone is doing their bit. We are having to cover the horrendous injury list, particularly in defence with players who are only just back from injury themselves.
MJ Williams is doing a sterling job out of position and George Johnston looks like he has never been away. We are beginning to see the real Josh Sheehan after his long-term injury. Now it is the time for heroes, and we are seeing them emerge.
It was only 1-0 today. It could and should have been more but the main thing is that we got the result. That is all that matters as does getting the three points against Accrington.
