"Our energy levels were good but we just couldn't fashion that all-important goal," says Freedman

Dougie Freedman was left disappointed as Wanderers failed to break down Leeds United in a closely contested affair at Elland Road.

Luciano Becchio’s 66th-minute penalty proved the difference between the two sides on a bitterly cold afternoon in West Yorkshire.

Speaking in his post-match press conference Freedman said: “It was disappointing not to come away with the three points, as our performance merited the win.

“I thought it was a game of very few chances and a good number of those fell our way. Our energy levels were good but we just couldn't fashion that all-important goal.

“You’ve got to give credit to Leeds. They battled well and set themselves up to counter the threats we posed.

“I thought we were in control for the majority of the game, aside from a ten-minute period in which we conceded a needless penalty.

“As a squad we have to understand what it takes to not only to win matches, but see them out. We are working with the players on this and as we go forward it is key we address this.

“We have to ensure we play for the full game and not allow spells where the opposition are able to dictate the play.

“Ultimately we are very disappointed not to have been able to build on the win over Birmingham.

“We now have a home tie against Sunderland and that gives me a good opportunity to freshen up the squad and give some game time to those pushing for first team action.

“We have had a number of young players training with the first team squad for some time now. We’ve also brought in a number of players from the under-18 side.

“We had Tom Eaves, Josh Vela and Joe Riley all travelling with the squad today and it was good to give them the experience of a first team matchday.

“Joe and Josh have both had first team experience here and Tom has had a good loan spell with Bristol Rovers.

“I like to work with young players and I am looking forward to helping them progress.”

Reading that shite makes me quite angry. He seems to think taking a group of young players on a coach trip to Leeds is doing them some good.

Playing them instead of Mears & co would do them some fucking good.

Freedman out.

So is Vela recovered from his injury? Competing with Butterfield and Spearing for a place may slow his progress and they're loanees, not Wanderers. Would love to see Riley at RB. We need to give all 3 game time and it sounds like they may get a shot against Sunderland which is good news even if they get dominated - at least it may open DFs eyes to the options.

If Mears is better than Riley, then God help us all.

I would like to know what Copper Dragon thinks of Mears. He will have seen him at Burnley.

So instead of 0-0 we lost because of a Mears fook-up. He cost us a point.... concern yourself with no creativity/conversions into goals. 1-1, 1-2 etc and nobody would be complaining too much.

Get some fooking pace into this attack .....for God's sake put Riley, Ngog, Sordell, Ricketts for the next game.

I'm joining the Doogie Out bandwagon. He playing donkey's week after week. No good I'm sorry to say.

I didn't go today so I can't comment on individual performances but we lost 1-0 to a team placed 9th, [at the start of play] that has won its previous 4 home games, correct me if I am wrong so far!

We lost 1-0 to a rash challenge by a defender, which happens too often, but it seems from the stats at least, that we matched them in ever area over 90 minutes. On that basis Dougie's comments don't seem out of perspective to me.

Are forwards missing open goals treated with the same punishment?

Well he had far more decent games than he had shockers at Burnley.

He is defensively suspect at times because he likes to get forward but that to me means centre backs and centre midfielders have to be aware of that situation.

His temperament and his desire to fight and work were questioned at times.

The vast majority of Burnley fans were sad to see him go not just because he was part decent for us but that we didn't have one single replacement for him.
However, Eddie Howe came up with a masterstroke and got Kieran Trippier from Man City who in my opinion is better than Mears.
Better crosser of a ball, fights and works hard and is always one of the last to leave the pitch after clapping the Burnley fans.

"is always one of the last to leave the pitch after clapping the Burnley fans."

Ricketts usually does that, must be a full back thing.
