TONY Mowbray has today cleared up the confusion surrounding Bolton’s alleged deadline day bid for Rhys Williams.

Sky TV maintained throughout Tuesday afternoon and again yesterday that Boro had rejected a £6m offer for the versatile Australian.

This was despite Mowbray dismissing the speculation during his pre-match press conference on Tuesday.

Now the dust has settled on what was, in truth, a fairly dull final day of the January window, the Boro boss has told the Gazette that there was no formal approach, simply a brief dialogue between Steve Gibson and his opposite number at Bolton Phil Gartside.

And it appears talk of a £6m bid is well wide of the mark.

“I think Sky are way out on the numbers to be fair,” Mowbray revealed. “I think there was a conversation to my chairman from their chairman but I don’t think numbers were discussed anywhere near that level.

“It never really got off the ground and I don’t think my chairman had any intention of selling. Rhys is a key component of what we’re trying to do here.”

Bolton boss Owen Coyle made it clear last summer that he rated Williams, who played under him during a loan spell at Burnley.
But the player, who has almost 18 months remaining on his current deal, has maintained that he’s happy to wait until the end of the season and see which division Boro are in before deciding on his future.
