I was only a nipper at the time but looking back there was few decent players and some good football. Jim McDonagh, Paul Jones, Big Sam, Roy Greaves, Frankie Worthy and Whatmore not to mention Thompson and Willie Morgan of course.

Not forgetting Johnny Byrom, John Ritson and Tony Dunne. Byrom left us the year before we got promoted to Division 1.

I'm sure I remember one season where Steve Taylor partnered Whatmore and they were both scoring goals for fun.

Gary Jones was around that time too.

(and Paul Fletcher a tad before that who Copper - if he is old enough - will no doubt remember)

Here's an anecdote about John Byrom- one of the best players of recent decades. He once scored one of the most beautiful goals ever against Stoke. Inside the penalty area- shimmied left and right and lost two defenders and curled it round the goalkeeper. Sheer magic.
When Burnden was being sold off bit by bit - you could buy some of the pitch for a fiver.
I deliberately bought the bit he was stood on when he scored the goal- and proudly installed it in my back lawn in my new house in Rammy!
It didn't last though as the wife had a couple of cairn terriers who were so attracted to it (probably the fertiliser) that on a daily basis they pissed all over it and killed it off.
I've never forgiven them- or the wife either

I met John Byrom last year at a Sportsmans evening. He still does a bit of after dinner speaking. A real gent.

Rammy. It's the Black Watch tartan. The photo was taken at one of the banquet suites at Lancaster Uni. John Byrom was last years speaker and tomorrow night it's Fabrice Muamba.

An oldie that always seems to slip under the radar - even though he's remained around football for donkeys years is Gordon Taylor OBE, CEO of the PFA. He played over 250 times for us and scored about 50 goals as a winger. What I liked about him (apart from being part of a really great Wanderers team) was that he was a fat barsteward and seemed to have a beer belly supported by matchstick legs, but could still shift a bit, great crosser and a good shot.
He just didn't look like a professional footballer, let alone a pacy winger but he did the business.

I know he wasn't the lightest on his feet, nor was he the fleetest of foot, but as a character, I liked Trevor Morgan. Built like a tank, and almost as fast Very Happy
