NEW CLUB STATEMENT: IT'S NOT HAPPENING

The club have taken on board feedback from our fan base and following discussions between Chairman Phil Gartside and several local and national politicians, including Leader of Bolton Council Cliff Morris, will no longer be entering into a sponsorship agreement with QuickQuid.

The club is proud of its place in the local community and has worked tirelessly for a considerable time to build relationships across a wide spectrum of community projects. In particular the successful education programmes, which have seen over 350 students pass through the club in the last two years, and the continued exceptional work of the club’s Community Trust.

Whilst we anticipated some negative responses from the initial agreement, we underestimated the adverse reaction to the sector of business in which the sponsor operated. We undertook significant research into QuickQuid and were satisfied that they were a regulated and responsible lender.

Councillor Morris said: “I am pleased with Bolton Wanderers Football Club’s decision to reconsider their recent sponsorship proposal.”

“We have been in discussion with the club since last week’s announcement to raise our concerns and those of the community. Their response clearly shows the value the club places on the support of their fans and the wider Bolton family.”

Phil Gartside said: “We have worked for years to build trust and participation with the community through our Community Trust, education programmes, and other initiatives that are currently underway in partnership with local and national government.

“We don’t want our commercial relationships to come between us and our community, and neither does QuickQuid.”

After speaking with the University of Bolton Chancellor The Baroness Morris of Bolton and Vice Chancellor Dr George Holmes, and building on our already active partnership with the university, they introduced us to one of their technology partners, FibrLec.

FibrLec ([You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
) are a new Bolton-based sustainable energy company that specialise in commercialising the university’s innovative smart materials. Their logo incorporating the university logo will feature on the club’s new match kit and training wear for the next two years.

Gartside added: “We are proud that our club will be working closely with a local community technology company that has grown from the University of Bolton.”

Dr Holmes said: “The university already has a close working relationship with Bolton Wanderers in the field of sport and exercise science and sports rehabilitation for elite athletes. This latest venture builds further on this strategic partnership.”

I think it was the right move to be honest. The board dropped a clanger and the ensuing bad publicity PLUS the threat of other long term local sponsors pulling out has obviously made them see financial sense.

£500,000 isn't worth all the bad publicity and ill feeling. I am much happier with Fibrlec tbh.

Would imagine the shirts with Quick Quid on will be in huge demand now as collectors items.

Fickle fans eh!?

I assume the club now will have to budget for half a million pounds less income over the next two years as well.

They already have a new shirt sponsor - as announced on Watchdog. It is a small energy firm and for the same price (again according to Watchdog)

Edit - that will teach me to go straight to the last page - FibrLec as seen on page 9!!!

Sorry sluffy but I don't think it is fickle at all. The money is the same and the company isn't a bad press seeking one. Instead it is a local and innovative business that will benefit from the association with us as well as we will with it.

Fair play to the club, fucking off the loan sharks and giving sponsorship to a local business/university.

I think this is about more than a few people not buying the shirt.
It's about not further alienating supporters, which could cost more than £500,000 in the long run.

Good business move, in my opinion.

No, you've missed my point Johnny.

No one wanted the shirt with Quick Quid on them.

Now there isn't going to be a shirt with QQ on it, I bet people will be lining up to get their hands on the redundant but already existing QQ logoed shirts so they can either keep them as collectors items or flog them on ebay! - That's what I was meaning about fickle fans!

As for finding a half million pound sponsor on our own doorstep within a few days of the reaction to the QQ deal - well I'm absolutely amazed - and find it a bit difficult to believe tbh.

Here's a bit of info on our new, new sponsors FibrLec:-

The company was formed recently by a University of Bolton graduate. The IREET and IMRI both at the University of Bolton are officially regarded as world leading centres for “smart material” science. They have invented a piezoelectric photovoltaic fibre which is capable of converting energy from sunlight, wind and rain. This new FibrLec material, which is in the form of an extruded polymer, is being taken to market by FibrLec Ltd. The proceeds from the commercialisation will support scholarships and bursaries for students in need of financial support to study in science, technology and maths (STEM) at the University. This is particularly important at a time when the costs of higher education in England for all students have increased significantly.

In a nutshell. Plus the board retain the moral highground.

It is a good move and I appreciate the club having a local institution as the sponsor - but it does look like a backyard operation. The website is uninspiring - then again, it doesn't need to inspire me. Still a good move.
