Yes - in the world of media it could be argued they were. For as you have already written, God is the construct of man i.e. what predicates their belief structure rightly or wrongly as it was in the case of these dickheads who killed the soldier.
Do you think that Gary Glitter believed he was doing something wrong? I don't - I think he rationalised what he was doing so that in his head it was Ok to do it. Similarly, these twats believed they were doing something in the name of Islam although I suspect they had "issues".
In both cases, their constructs were out of synch with societal values including Islamic values.
If I believe that the only way to save Bolton Wanderers is to top my missus, I could do it and claim that I did it in the name of BWFC and the press could have a field day, branding BWFC fans as crazed murderers - although they wouldn't as BWFC are predominantly their core audience whereas Muslims are an easy target in our society.
Understand that the media write stories to stimulate the already existing prejudices of their core market and whilst the Telegraph might take a different angle from the Guardian on certain issues, the genuine concerns of the populace regarding e.g. overpopulation, immigration, jobs and cultural differences touch many people in different ways according to their experience and circumstances so race/religion (and our press doesn't differentiate between the two) is always going to be a seller for lazy journalists.
And we lap it up without looking past the circumstances of the individuals involved because it's a lot easier to put people into boxes and label them accordingly.
