really piss me off. They all ring off without apology as soon as you ask them where they got your telephone number and they all have strong south Asian accents. My number is ex-directory and we are registered with the Telephone Preference Service so we should not be getting these calls.

However the TPS is as useless as BT. I strongly recommend anyone else annoyed by these calls using this link

It is a very helpful site run by Which?

I had one twat trying to make me pay to stop the nuisance calls. He seemed a bit put out when I told him I didn't want them stopping and asked me why? I told him I like having some sport with them before I tell them to fuck off and stop invading my privacy!!

I have been getting quite a lot on my mobile recently, hardly any on the landline. To be honest I never answer them because I know what will happen if I answer the phone to these pricks.

i have TPS and its not too bad, but i do still get a few, the worst ones now are all automated messages so you don't even get the pleasure of telling them to piss off and don't call back.

Just tell them to give you their number and you'll call them back.

That's worst, when you're expecting a important phone call and it's fucking British Gas mithering.

Or even BT ringing up asking whether you get unwanted calls and if you do they can help stop them...twats.

Turn the tables on them. Interrupt their spiel and tell them you are selling your car and would they like to buy it. Go into detail about it, how old it is, MOT, mileage, etc. , when you finally give them a moment to speak act really disappointed when they say they're not interested, then try to sell them  a 2nd hand TV you're selling etc.etc. They will soon get the message and you will have wasted a good amount of their time and get a good laugh into the bargain.

Exactly what Hip Priest says.

Although I like to be a bit more sinister. There's been dead bodies, Muslim suicide bombers, the SAS, a train spotter from Settle and Jack Nicholson in my house when they've rung.

If you haven't the time then a whistle by the phone is a must, short and sweet.

I use a few techniques

Phone sex is always a fun one when I ask them if they rang me to get them horny

Also whenever I get a call asking for my wife I say in my deepest voice "mrs xxxx speaking" --- that throws them big time

Last one I got I pretended I was special and asked him if he liked balloons as much as I did and that pink ones were my favourite

Funnily enough after a few weeks all my calls stopped almost as if they took me off all the lists and labelled me as a twat

Perhaps this is the way to do it!

A man targeted by marketing companies is making money from cold calls with his own premium-rate phone number.

In November 2011 Lee Beaumont paid £10 plus VAT to set up his personal 0871 line - so to call him now costs 10p, from which he receives 7p.

The Leeds businessman told BBC Radio 4's You and Yours programme that the premium line had so far made £300.

Phone Pay Plus, which regulates premium numbers, said it strongly discouraged people from adopting the idea.

Mr Beaumont came up with the plan when he grew sick of calls offering to help him reclaim payment protection insurance (PPI), or install solar panels.

He said: "I don't use my normal Leeds number for anyone but my friends and family."

Once he had set up the 0871 line, every time a bank, gas or electricity supplier asked him for his details online, he submitted it as his contact number.

He added he was "very honest" and the companies did ask why he had a premium number.

He told the programme he replied: "Because I'm getting annoyed with PPI phone calls when I'm trying to watch Coronation Street so I'd rather make 10p a minute."

He said almost all of the companies he dealt with were happy to use it and if they refused he asked them to email.

The number of calls received by Mr Beaumont has fallen from between 20 and 30 a month to just 13 last month.

Because he works from home, Mr Beaumont has been able to increase his revenue by keeping cold callers talking - asking for more details about their services.

He admitted, the scheme had changed his attitude, saying: "I want cold calls", and that he had moved on to encouraging companies to make contact.

After a recent problem with his online shopping, he declined to call an 0845 number but posted his number on Twitter in the knowledge that the number could be picked up by marketing companies.

But the premium number regulator Phone Pay Plus says the public should think twice before setting up their own lines.

They say phone line providers must meet consumer protection standards, which include transparency, fairness and complaint handling, which would mean clearly setting out the cost of each call to any organisation that rang.

They told You and Yours: "Premium-rate numbers are not designed to be used in this way and we would strongly discourage any listeners from adopting this idea, as they will be liable under our code for any breaches and subsequent fines that result."

A few months ago I was in the hospital for major surgery. My insurance - which I pay for every month - covered most of the expense and the balance was paid by myself.
Last week I got a letter from the hospital telling me they will be having someone call me. The reason is that they are looking for people to donate money to them which will help to pay for people who they treat that don't have insurance.
