ON THIS DAY: In 1888, Bolton Wanderers took part in the first round of Football League matches ever played. Winger Kenny Davenport scored the first ever Football League goal for Bolton, who despite taking a three-goal lead, eventually lost 6-3 against Derby County at Pikes Lane.

That was a bit of a come down as we'd thrashed Blackburn, Everton and "a Scottish team" five years earlier at Turton where we'd been practically undefeated for 30 years in the 20 a side version of the game.
Clearly, we're not suited to the eleven a side version.
