That was superb, watched it last night. Very eye opening, though again, not surprising.
thanks for the recommendation.

I thought from what you had posted on the forums over the years, that you would appreciate that film.
I found it exceptionally good too and probably more nearer than the truth of how we have arrived at where we are in the world, than anything else I've seen or read elsewhere.

The bit towards the end about how the Afghan war spiralled out of control is very eye opening, especially the meeting with the tribal elders who told the army the problems.... and were ignored completely.
then they tried to show them an episode of blue planet.... hard to believe really.

I think what it is, is that you base your decisions on what you, yourself know.
In Britain and the US the vast majority of government officials (local and national) and police forces ARE honest. I guess the British in Helman (and elsewhere) simply thought the village elders had some axe to grind with theirs - rather than as now seems probable - that the regieme in which they came to support and upheld was corrupt and the law enforcement officers were their armed enforcers.
Once the penny finally dropped with the British and US, what can they do? They can't 'overthrow' the Afghan government that for a numbers of years they had been supporting and being killed and maimed for and they couldn't just remove the police and replace them with others - because who exactly are the good guys anymore?
I assume that was the point that we decided to plan our 'reterat' from there.
As for the Blue Planet I guess that was supposed to be symnolic in some way of we all share this planet and need to coexist to survive??
One inresting bit I found in the film was that Osama Bin Laden was probably one of the 'good' bad guys - in that at least he tried to move the Islam view 'forward' in the world, rather than the IS (ISIS) view of taking it back over a thousand years to an 'idealistic' view of how the world was back then.
Frightening how so many people seem to 'buy' in to this view without even questioning it.
The problem as the film shows is that 'power corrupts'. The people in power in Islam are the religious leaders - it is in their own interest to maintain the status quo - and thus 'crush' dissenters - hence non true believers should be put to death - sort of thing.
Theres a lot of good in the credo of any religion, the problem like in anything else only begins when it is taken to the extremes.
It's a tragedy that millions of people over the years have died and still continue to die because if it.
I'm sure God (by whatever name he is known under) - if you believe in him - never wanted that.

And that is why the Pakistani authorities came down hard on Al Qaeda but turned a blind eye to the activities of the Taliban.

It's been dumbed down even more so the story lines are weak and the focus is on models posing around trying to be sexy but just looking like cliches of 60s soft porn.
The current series is really poor. It's like "Friends" but even worse and with no attempt at humour. Aviod.
Noticed Nat's new avatar is Donna from Suits. Sadly, even she can't stop it from being shite.

It's one of the funniest programmes on TV if you want gag after gag.

I managed about 15 minutes of the first episode, it was terrible but I do like Chelsea Peretti and Andy Samberg.
